To pre pare a New Edition of Berkeley's Works, with some account of his life, as the edition of 1871 was out of print; a circumstance which I had not expected to occur in my lifetime. It seemed presumptuous to undertake what might have been entrusted to some one probably more in touch with living thought; and in one's eighty-second year, time and strength are wanting for remote research. But the recollection that I was attracted to philosophy largely by Berkeley, in the morning of life more than sixty years ago, combined with the pleasure derived from association in this way with the great University in which he found an academic home in his old age, moved me in the late evening of life to make the attempt. And now, at the beginning of the twentieth century, I offer these volumes, which still imperfectly realise my ideal of a final Oxford edition of the philosopher who spent his last days in Oxford, and whose mortal remains rest in its Cathedral. It was the first symptom of practical endeavour to realise around him a state of society nearer to his own lofty ideal; the Cassandra wail of a sorrowful prophet, who soon after turned his eye of hope to more distant regions. In one Of his letters to Lord Percival, he tells that in the year after his return from Italy, he had made up his mind to spend the remainder of his life in Bermuda, in order to establish there a missionary college 'for promoting reformation' of manners amongst the English in our western'plantations, and for the propa gation of the Gospel amongst the American savages.' The next seven years were largely given to negotiations and preparations with a view to exchanging life in an Old World of social decay for an American Utopia. In the interval he had been advanced to the Deanery Of Derry. A multiplicity of affairs had arrested his pen, for in those ten years his only publication was the few pages of A Proposal for the better supplying of Churches in our Foreign Plantations, issued in I725, and the Verses on the pmspect of Planting Arts and Sciences in America. This number of Yeats Annual collects the essays resulting from the University College Cork/ESB International Annual W. B. Yeats Lectures Series (2003-2008) by Roy Foster, Warwick Gould, John Kelly, Paul Muldoon, Bernard O’Donoghue and Helen Vendler. Those that were available in pamphlet form are now collectors’ items, but here is the complete series. These revised essays cover such themes as Yeats and the Refrain, Yeats as a Love Poet, Yeats, Ireland and Europe, the puzzles he created and solved with his art of poetic sequences, and his long and crucial interaction with the emerging T. S. Eliot. The series was inaugurated by a study of Yeats and his Books, which marked the gift to the Boole Library, Cork, of Dr Eamonn Cantwell’s collection of rare editions of books by Yeats (here catalogued by Crónán Ó Doibhlin). Many of the volume’s fifty-six plates offer images of artists’ designs and resulting first editions. This bibliographical theme is continued with Colin Smythe’s census of surviving copies of Yeats’s earliest separate publication, Mosada (1886) and a resultant piece by Warwick Gould on that dramatic poem’s source in the legend of The Phantom Ship.
