Over this career, Ismar David amassed an archive which was donated to the Cary Library at RIT. This book rediscovers an important contribution to a popular field of graphic design and suggests that Ismar David's calligraphic book jackets present a viable alternative to the current design approach. Ismar David belonged to a group of accomplished calligraphers who established themselves as jacket designers in New York in the 1950s. David's jacket designs are distinguished from other work of the period as powerful and expressive. His style is informed by a thorough mastery of the typographic tradition yet looks remarkably fresh, even today. He combines calligrapher's craft with fine artist's sensibility "to communicate his ideas and his feelings in the service of the book." The book examines the historical context of Ismar David's work including a concise overview of the history of book jacket design in Germany and in the U.S. and describes David's freelance career in publishing. Thirty of his noteworthy jackets are highlighted and discussed. The author argues that the current preference for concept-driven jacket design may eventually give way to another style more closely based on formal craftsmanship that would benefit from Ismar David's legacy.

"Ismar David initiated the design of his comprehensive Hebrew typeface family in Jerusalem, in the 1930s. It is considered to be the first Hebrew multi-style family and consists of nine variations that show many innovative features that were never seen in earlier designs. Starting with a historical overview of the typographic environment in the state of Israel around the time it is was declared in 1948, this dissertation looks into the means of design and production of printed matter needed for the construction of a new nation. It then introduces David's life story in order to provide the background and context for his creation. Following the circumstances that led to the typeface design and production, this dissertation examines the typefaces design itself and studies the issues David has written about such as the historic references and the production technology. Using mostly material from David's archives, this study conducts a visual analysis of all members of the David Hebrew typeface family. The visual analysis provides an understadning of the relationship between the styles and weights of the family and isolates the factors that show the systematic thinking Ismar David applied to his design. By doing this, the dissertation looks to inform Hebrew typeface designers of David's approach and work process, in hope of contributing to future Hebrew type design challenges."--Abstract.
