Book Description
In the summer of 1883 Belgian travel writer Jules Leclercq spent ten days on horseback in Yellowstone, the world's first national park, exploring myriad natural wonders: astonishing geysers, majestic waterfalls, the vast lake, and the breathtaking canyon. He also recorded the considerable human activity, including the rampant vandalism. Leclercq's account of his travels is itself a small marvel blending natural history, firsthand impressions, scientific lore, and anecdote. Along with his observations on the park's long-rumored fountains of boiling water and mountains of glass, Leclercq describes camping near geysers, washing clothes in a bubbling hot spring, and meeting such diverse characters as local guides and tourists from the United States and Europe. Notables including former president Ulysses S. Grant and then-president Chester A. Arthur were also in the park that summer to inaugurate the newly completed leg of the Northern Pacific Railroad. A sensation in Europe, the book was never published in English. This deft translation at long last makes available to English-speaking readers a masterpiece of western American travel writing that is a fascinating historical document in its own right.

Excerpt from The Wonders of Geyser Land: A Trip to the Yellowstone National Park, of Wyoming A. Oldham, who, also was anxious to behold the beauties of this wonderful region, and we concluded to make immediate prepara tions for our departure. We accordingly each procured a saddle horse and a pack animal and expected to complete our prepara tions and be upon the road by the 1st of August. A few day 8 previous to the time of our contemplated departure, however, I met Mr. A. Arnold, of Blackfoot, who, upon being informed that Mr. Oldham and myself were about ready to start for the Geysers or National Park, said that if we would wait un til he could complete his preparations he would accompany us. Being glad of his company we consented to do so, and then, since there were three of us, we altered our plans as to the manner of our going and procured a buggy. Book Description
Yellowstone National Park's famous geysers, exotic landscape, and beautiful wildlife partially explain its enormous popularity, but there is something more to the Yellowstone experience—a powerful spirit to the place that is more than the sum of its parts. This fascinating history of America's favorite national park shows how that spirit has endured over Yellowstone's 127-year existence. Meyer shows that Yellowstone has consistently evoked awe in different generations of Americans, even as our attitudes toward nature have changed over the years. That awe is also captured in photographer Vance Howard's evocative images, which, alongside historic photographs and other early artistic interpretations of the Park's wonders, support Meyer's view that Yellowstone's unique sense of place makes it worth preserving not only for its ecological value but for its lasting importance in American culture.
