In order to fill a gap in gender history for countries east of the Rhine River, the studies included present how official city-funded brothels in medieval Austria worked, how a princess' disability affected her life as Byzantine empress, how one unmarried Transylvanian woman who got pregnant dealt with being the center of a court case, and how enslaved women in medieval Hungary were treated as sexual property. A History of Modern Political Thought in East Central Europe is a synthetic work, authored by an international team of researchers, covering twenty national cultures and 250 years. The present volume is a sequel to Volume I: Negotiating Modernity in the 'Long Nineteenth Century'. It begins with the end of the Great War, depicting the colorful intellectual landscape of the interwar period and the increasing political and ideological radicalization culminating in the Second World War. Taking the war experience both as a breaking point but in many ways also a transmitter of previous intellectual traditions, it maps the intellectual paradigms and debates of the immediate postwar years, marked by a negotiation between the democratic and communist agendas, as well as the subsequent processes of political and cultural Stalinization. The huge number of victims of the Holocaust is emotionally incomprehensible. The real horror can only be apprehended on the individual level. In the case of the Holocaust, many such records exist, since, as Ruth Wisse has observed, "many of the Jews in the ghettos and concentration camps . . . showed more concern for preserving a record of the incredible event they were witnessing than for their own survival." The studies presented in this volume survey this evidence--diaries, letters, oral histories, ghetto chronicles, rabbinic works, collections of photographs, songs--that originated in Warsaw, Lodz, Vilna, Auschwitz, and elsewhere.
