Book Description
Excerpt from Underground Waters of Southern Louisiana In the writer's studies of the geology of southern Louisiana during the last three years, opportunities have presented themselves for col lecting data relating to the underground waters of this section of the. State. A brief summary of the data so collected was given in Part viof the report of the State geological survey for the year 1902, in Special Report No. 6, The Subterranean Waters of Louisiana. Since the publication of this work one winter season has been spent. In southern Louisiana in general geological work, and one month (june 20 to July been devoted to field work bearing exclusively on water supplies. This report, therefore, may be con sidered as an enlarged and Ievised edition of the special report named, based, in large measure, 'on facts gathered by the writer while he was employed by the State of Louisiana. After this explanation it seems scarcely necessary to use quotation marks or to give precise references in every case where facts have been taken from the earlier report. Book Description
Excerpt from Wetlands Restoration Study: West Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Thousands of acres of wetlands comprising the upper reaches of the Barataria Basin flank the west bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. These wetlands are valued for their fisheries and recreational value as well as their ability to protect the inhabited areas of the Parish from storm surges. The wetlands in this area are being stressed and functionally degraded or lost as a direct result of human activities that have limited traditional sources of fresh water and nutrients, and by the effects of subsidence. Historically, flows from the Mississippi River provided the fresh water, nutrients and sediments needed to maintain healthy wetlands, and counteract the natural subsidence associated with deltaic systems. Construction of flood and hurricane protection levees has eliminated the interconnection between the River and the. Book Description
Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 7: April, 1955 Salt water intrusion of the coastal marshes is an other factor of considerable importance. Excessive salt water intrusion results in fresh and estuarine waters becoming more saline and marine with ac companying environmental changes - one type of vegetation will be replaced by another, while one population of animals may be replaced by another or suffer a marked decrease in numbers. Generally speaking, such changes in our marshes are deiri mental to our wildlife, especially waterfowl and fur bearers. Navigation channels and canals associated with the Gulf of Mexico have enhanced salt water intru sion in south Louisiana. Meanwhile, above this area diversion of waters from their natural drainage routes by flood control, drainage, irrigation, and land reclamation projects, has reduced the volume of incoming fresh waters over wide areas. Evidence indicates that the resulting stabilization of these waters has in turn resulted in many of these bodies of water becoming choked with water hyacinths and other noxious plants. In southwest Louisiana where the demands are high for sweet or fresh water for irrigation of the rice crops, salt water intrusion has become a problem of great proportions. Coastal shallow fresh marshes are becoming dry; apparently this may be attributed to drainage and the absence of incoming Water due to losses to irrigation and drought conditions. Considerable benefits may be attributed to the rice lands, however, as feeding grounds for the wintering waterfowl.
