Book Description
The papers collected in this volume are a selection of papers presented at a conference on Language and Translation (Irbid, Jordan, 1992). In their revised form, they offer comparisons between Western and Arabic language usage and transfer. The articles bring together linguistic and cultural aspects in translation in a functional discourse framework set out in Part One: Theory, Culture, Ideology. Part Two addresses aspects for comparisons among translations and their cultural contexts (equivalence, stylistics and paragraphing). Part Three features Arabic-English language contact, specifically in technical writing, the media and academia. Part Four deals with problems in lexicography and grammar: terminology, verb-particle combinations and semantic diversity of radical-doubling forms and includes a proposal for a new approach to English/Arabic dictionaries. Part Five turns to issues of interest to language teachers with practical proposals and demonstrations. Part Six deals with geopolitical factors linking the West and Middle East, focusing on equality in communication and exchange of information.

Book Description
Clairborne embraced his mother, then his sister. He took off his broad-brimmed grey hat, swept it downward in his best cavalier salute, turned and rode off, not once looking back. There's no turning back in Randolph Carter Harrison's riveting debut novel, West from Yesterday, where one man's flight from the past may cost him everything. Tucker Clairborne's world is shattered by the Civil War and its horrific aftermath when his father and brother are killed. Expected to take over the family's Virginia plantation, he abandons expectations and rides west toward the unknown. This decision plunges Clairborne down a path defined by discovery and sudden death. Dismayed by his talent for killing, he reluctantly joins forces with an ex-slave who served in the 10th US Cavalry regiment. Together, these unlikely allies enter the country's hostile heartland, confronting Comanche, prejudice and the infinite hazard of the landscape they must cross. But the countryside may prove the least of their worries as danger closes in, forcing Clairborne to face down his demons once and for all. An adrenaline-pumping ride through an unforgiving land, West from Yesterday brings the Wild West to life like never before.

Book Description
The distinctive way of life of the Southern Appalachian people has often been criticized, romanticized or derided, but rarely has it been understood. Yesterday's People, the fruit of many years' labor in the mountains, reveals the fears, anxieties, and hopes that underlie the mountaineers' way of thinking and acting, and thereby shape their relationships in family and community. First published in 1965, this book has been an indispensable guide for all who seek to study, work or live within the Appalachian culture.

Book Description
This is one of the most important baseball books to be published in a long time, taking a comprehensive look at black participation in the national pastime from 1858 through 1900. It provides team rosters and team histories, player biographies, a list of umpires and games they officiated and information on team managers and team secretaries. Well known organizations like the Washington's Mutuals, Philadelphia Pythians, Chicago Uniques, St. Louis Black Stockings, Cuban Giants and Chicago Unions are documented, as well as lesser known teams like the Wilmington Mutuals, Newton Black Stockings, San Francisco Enterprise, Dallas Black Stockings, Galveston Flyaways, Louisville Brotherhoods and Helena Pastimes. Player biographies trace their connections between teams across the country. Essays frame the biographies, discussing the social and cultural events that shaped black baseball. Waiters and barbers formed the earliest organized clubs and developed local, regional and national circuits. Some players belonged to both white and colored clubs, and some umpires officiated colored, white and interracial matches. High schools nurtured young players and transformed them into powerhouse teams, like Cincinnati's Vigilant Base Ball Club. A special essay covers visual representations of black baseball and the artists who created them, including colored artists of color who were also baseballists.

Book Description
The Island nation of Ma-Ural has long been a place of peace and prosperity, with vast deposits of precious gems and mythril ore—valuable for its magical properties and heavily sought after on the mainland—but perhaps its greatest resource is opportunity. It has always been a place of sanctuary and rebirth, and host to many adventurers seeking not only their second-chance in life but a chance at immortality, as they begin their pilgrimage to the hidden city of Mysrik. But times are changing. Ma-Ural’s long established peace has been crumbling, with tensions rising between the east and west, between races, and between simple magic users and one who is willing to stop at nothing to gain all the power of Mysrik for his own nefarious purposes. Standing in his way are an unlikely group of companions brought together by circumstance: Elaria, a naïve and virtuous paladin, hoping to make a name for herself and honour both her training and her oath; Hoots, a runaway gnome more powerful than her diminutive form would suggest; Trit, a half-elf bard looking for answers about his family; and “Carion,” a powerful demon-kin, haunted by a past so dark he might never escape it, even if he manages to live forever.
