Book Description
The international community invests billions annually in thousands of projects designed to overcome poverty, stop violence, spread human rights, fight terrorism and combat global warming. The hope is that these separate projects will 'add up' to lasting societal change in places like Afghanistan. In reality, these initiatives are not adding up to sustainable peace. Making Peace Last offers ways of improving the productivity of peacebuilding. This book defines the theory, analysis and practice needed to create peacebuilding approaches that are as dynamic and adaptive as the societies they are trying to affect. The book is based on a combination of field experience and research into peacebuilding and conflict resolution. This book can also be used as a textbook in courses on peace-building, security and development. Making Peace Last is a comprehensive approach to finding sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing social problems.

Book Description
Excerpt from Ways to Lasting Peace The peace of contentment finds its ideal in intel lectual and physical repose, the absence of discord ant factors and the harmony of life. It is the peace of a Corot landscape, of running brooks, green thickets and meadows carpeted with flowers. It would permit a happy existence to mollycoddles, as well as to the red coat bully in his boots, of whom Thackeray speaks. Its essence is peace of mind, the absence of fierce unrest and sordid, low ambition, the old peace with velvet-sandalled feet of the Japanese poet. Its symbol in animal life is appropriately found in the dove. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This anthology of primary documents traces Reconstruction in the aftermath of the Civil War, chronicling the way Americans--Northern, Southern, black, and white--responded to the changes unleashed by the surrender at Appomattox and the end of slavery. Showcasing an impressive collection of original documents, including government publications, newspaper articles, speeches, pamphlets, and personal letters, this book captures the voices of a broad range of Americans, including Civil War veterans, former slaveholders, Northerners living in the South, and African-American men and women who lived through one of the most trying, complex, and misunderstood periods of American history.

Book Description
Waging Peace offers the first fully comprehensive study of Eisenhower's "New Look" program of national security, which provided the groundwork for the next three decades of America's Cold War strategy. Though the Cold War itself and the idea of containment originated under Truman, it was left to Eisenhower to develop the first coherent and sustainable strategy for addressing the issues unique to the nuclear age. To this end, he designated a decision-making system centered around the National Security Council to take full advantage of the expertise and data from various departments and agencies and of the judgment of his principal advisors. The result was the formation of a "long haul" strategy of preventing war and Soviet expansion and of mitigating Soviet hostility. Only now, in the aftermath of the Cold War, can Eisenhower's achievement be fully appreciated. This book will be of much interest to scholars and students of the Eisenhower era, diplomatic history, the Cold War, and contemporary foreign policy.
