Book Description
Excerpt from The Village School-Ma'am Act III, neater, with a more "dressed-up" appearance. Elvira Pratt. A small, wiry, nervous little woman, the typical village old maid dressmaker and gossip. She may have "frizzes" or "crimped" hair, but is not a caricature with the antiquated side-curls. Should be plain, quaint and amusing, but not exaggerated. In first two acts, a tidy dark dress of some cheap material. Act III, a bit more elaborate, but not overdone. Posie. A lanky, awkward and slow-witted girl of fifteen or thereabouts, lazy and generally half asleep. First two acts, cheap calico dress or large apron, rather untidy; hair in pigtails or long braids, somewhat awry. Act III, clean apron, hair arranged more neatly and tied with gay ribbons. Properties Two or three boxes and barrels; a few articles such as seen in a country store. Country newspaper. Stick and jack-knife, letter in envelope, drummers grip or sample case, several parcels of various sizes, tied up in wrapping paper; G. A. R. badge, gingham apron, kitchen towel, new dress for Ida May, rather fancy; plate, paper-covered novel, dollar bill, dress suit case. Book Description
Excerpt from The Schoolmaster of Hessville S john wimmer, the young school A teacher of the village, drove up in his buggy to the door of his sweetheart's home at the end of the one long street of Hessville, he was shocked and astonished to see Irene waiting for him on the porch in her blue calico working dress instead of her new lavender flowered voile with straw hat trimmed with lavender flowers to match. Inasmuch as his imagination had been playing with that lovely picture of her all the morning, it was disconcerting to find her, this afternoon, in blue calico - though, to be sure, even in that she was a sight to make a man tremble. Book Description
Excerpt from The Schoolmistress: Or, Instructive and Entertaining Conversations Between a Teacher and Her Scholars It is not the object of the following little Book, to convey a detailed account of the System of Instruction best adapted for a Village School. - Such information having been already widely circulated through other channels; besides which, however useful it might be to teachers, it could afford but little to interest their Pupils. The "School-mistress" supposes a judicious teacher not confining her attention to the more obvious branches of School instruction, but profiting by the opportunities afforded by her situation, to convey to her Scholars, a few Moral as well as Practical Lessons, for the improvement both of their character and condition. In one respect, however, the Patrons of such benevolent Establishments may derive a useful hint from the following work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management The present treatise on school methods and management is intended for teachers in the elementary country schools and for those in normal and high schools who expect to go into the rural schools to teach. The writer has studiously avoided all suggestions especially applicable to the management of city schools, and has purposely confined himself to such plans and methods as will be suited to the country school. While consolidation is an important movement, and many more weak districts should be united, yet in many parts of the United States the time is far distant when the one-room country school will, or should, be discontinued. A one-room school in the rural districts, taught by a competent teacher, is still a good place for a boy or girl to get the elements of an education. The United States Commissioner of Education reports that in the school year 1907-1908 there were five and one half million school children and one hundred thirty-four thousand teachers in cities of four thousand or more population; in the outside districts, there were eleven million children and three hundred sixty-one thousand teachers. In the state of Kansas there are two and one third times as many children in the one- and two-room schools and nearly five times as many teachers, as there are in the cities and towns maintaining graded systems of schools. Book Description
The first novel in the beloved Fairacre series, Village School introduces us to the remarkable schoolmistress Miss Read and her lovable group of students, who, with a mixture of skinned knees and smiles, are just as likely to lose themselves as their mittens... Welcome to the English village of Fairacre: a handful of thatch-roofed cottages, a church, the school, the promise of fair weather, friendly faces, and good cheer––at least most of the time. Here, everyone knows everyone else's business, and the villagers like each other anyway (even Miss Pringle, the irascible, gloomy cleaner of Fairacre School). With a wise heart and a discerning eye, Miss Read guides us through one crisp, glistening autumn in her village and introduces us to a cast of unforgettable characters and a world of drama, romance, and humor, all within a stone's throw of the school. By the time winter comes, you'll be nestled snugly into the warmth and wit of Fairacre and won't want to leave.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Dignity of the Common School Teacher's Mission: An Address Delivered Before the Minnesota Educational Association, Dec; 29, 1891 The old New England country village sch001 was an institution very peculiar. School committees and supervisors did not govern as they now do, but they turned the master like a gladiator into a den of young animals as much as to say - Now handle them if you can! I recollect engaging one such school and when I went before the committee to be examined, the first question was If you were at the north pole which way would you go to go north? And the second question was - How are your muscles? And when I answered, they were in a fair condition, the reply was That will do, go in and we will pay the damages. For the first two days we had some old fashion gymnastic exercises, not with stuffed sand bags but with real Yankee muscle, and after that it was lovely for twelve weeks, for there was a nobility about the roughest of those farmer boys and they respected the master when he was master, as every body does, and they despised the master when he is only a sissy as everybody should. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mountain School-Teacher The leaves fallen from the hickories, under the touch of waning summer, took on now, by the magic of this sun, golden tones of red and yellow. Woodpeckers hammered on the great trees along this path. Insects moved between the branches, the wild bee, the hornet, the yel low butterfly, as though the aerial life of the woods had been drawn here to the sun.
