Book Description
In my poem 'Life's Vagaries' I describe observations of a tattooed female, shuffling along in the market place with her boyfriend and the sign on a nearby church inviting people to 'light candles'. My emotional response is to juxtapose the meaning of love with religion. This book of poems expresses a wide range of experiences as I create responses to major themes in life such as birth, love and death. Covering over seventy years, the poems show how an early religious upbringing can leave its almost 'Freudian' imprint. This can be seen in 'Lessons of War' one of my early memories. My interest in philosophy is demonstrated in the poem 'Stages of Life in a Dressing Gown' where I reach a mid-life crisis and almost press the self destruct button...but thankfully recover to continue the journey. Hope you will join the journey with me and see life from a different perspective.

The Vanishing Middle Class, new epilogue
Author: Peter Temin
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262535297
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Why the United States has developed an economy divided between rich and poor and how racism helped bring this about. The United States is becoming a nation of rich and poor, with few families in the middle. In this book, MIT economist Peter Temin offers an illuminating way to look at the vanishing middle class. Temin argues that American history and politics, particularly slavery and its aftermath, play an important part in the widening gap between rich and poor. Temin employs a well-known, simple model of a dual economy to examine the dynamics of the rich/poor divide in America, and outlines ways to work toward greater equality so that America will no longer have one economy for the rich and one for the poor. Many poorer Americans live in conditions resembling those of a developing country—substandard education, dilapidated housing, and few stable employment opportunities. And although almost half of black Americans are poor, most poor people are not black. Conservative white politicians still appeal to the racism of poor white voters to get support for policies that harm low-income people as a whole, casting recipients of social programs as the Other—black, Latino, not like "us." Politicians also use mass incarceration as a tool to keep black and Latino Americans from participating fully in society. Money goes to a vast entrenched prison system rather than to education. In the dual justice system, the rich pay fines and the poor go to jail.

Letifer
Author: T D Cloud
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 506
Book Description
Gabriel Spencer is a Detroit beat cop determined to make detective by any means possible, and putting an end to a mysterious string of murders looks like the quickest way to accomplish that goal. Prostitutes and escorts, drained of blood, bodies abandoned in ditches, playgrounds, and Dumpsters... It all reeks of a similar spate of killings from decades past, and no one but Gabriel seems to see the connection. Modern crimes, however, can sometimes have ancient origins, and unfortunately for Gabriel, he fails to account for the real culprit- or the thought that perhaps he isn't the only one on the hunt for a killer. A vampiric crime thriller tinged with romance, horror, and intense world-building, Letifer serves as a standalone novel in The Dark Vagaries series.
