Book Description
Excerpt from The Use of Electrolytes in the Purification and Preparation of Clays Clay can be obtained so finely divided that they can make true colloidal solutions. Colloidal clay belongs to the class known as suspensoids and is reversible - that is, the particles can be dispersed in water or thrown out of colloidal solution by means of suitable electrolytes. The action of electrolytes has been an extremely valuable aid both in the purification of clay and in the casting of clay wares. New applications are continually being discovered. Book Description
Excerpt from Use of Sodium Salts in the Purification of Clays and in the Casting Process The amount of alkaline reagent to be used depends upon the character of the clay. In the materials investigated so far in this laboratory the amounts varied from about 0. 05 to 0. 2 per cent, or from 1 to 4 pounds per ton of dried clay. The actual cost of the reagent, therefore, should be trifling and should not exceed 7 to 8 cents per ton, including the cost of the aluminum sulphate used for coagulation. Too great an addition. Might entirely nullify the action. It is important, therefore, that in each case the proper amount of alkali be determined by the use of the viscosimeter, or by means of a series of glass settling tubes in which the degree of deflocculation is readily observed. In Fig. 1 the efl'ect of increasing amounts of caustic soda upon fuller's earth is shown, representing the phases of coagulation, defioccu lation, and again of coagulation after standing for 1 2 hours. Book Description
The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.

Book Description
Arguably the oldest form of health care, Ayurveda is often referred to as the "Mother of All Healing." Although there has been considerable scientific research done in this area during the last 50 years, the results of that research have not been adequately disseminated. Meeting the need for an authoritative, evidence-based reference, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies is the first book to analyze and synthesize current research supporting Ayurvedic medicine. This book reviews the latest scientific information, evaluates the research data, and presents it in an easy to use format. The editor has carefully selected topics based on the availability of scientific studies and the prevalence of a disease. With contributions from experts in their respective fields, topics include Ayurvedic disease management, panchkarma, Ayurvedic bhasmas, the current status of Ayurveda in India, clinical research design, and evaluation of typical clinical trials of certain diseases, to name just a few. While there are many books devoted to Ayurveda, very few have any in-depth basis in scientific studies. This book provides a critical evaluation of literature, clinical trials, and biochemical and pharmacological studies on major Ayurvedic therapies that demonstrates how they are supported by scientific data. Providing a natural bridge from Ayurveda to Western medicine, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies facilitates the integration of these therapies by health care providers.

Book Description
Based on the author's lectures to graduate students of geosciences, physics, chemistry and materials science, this didactic handbook covers basic aspects of ceramics such as composition and structure as well as such advanced topics as achieving specific functionalities by choosing the right materials. The focus lies on the thermal transformation processes of natural raw materials to arrive at traditional structural ceramics and on the general physical principles of advanced functional ceramics. The book thus provides practice-oriented information to readers in research, development and engineering on how to understand, make and improve ceramics and derived products, while also serving as a rapid reference for the practitioner. The choice of topics and style of presentation make it equally useful for chemists, materials scientists, engineers and mineralogists.
