Book Description
This is the story of a man born in rural Poland in 1923. During his childhood, the world changed for his country. In September, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, destroyed its weak armed forces and controlled the country for the next six years. With that invasion, the life of Wladyslaw (Wally) Pieszka was never the same. From being required to work at Auschwitz and being drafted into the German Army, to surviving the battle for Stalingrad in 1942 and escaping to England in 1943, his reasons for survival were either the Grace of God, pure luck, or the mere desire to live. His story is almost unbelievable but for the rare photographs and documents he and his mother were able to maintain. Being forced into manhood while still a boy is not something one foresees when growing up. This is the history of one man who wore the uniforms of both Nazi Germany and the Allied Forces in World War II; a man forced to work at Auschwitz during its years of horror; a soldier who fought in the bloodiest battle in the history of warfare, Stalingrad. After having escaped from the German Army and completing his service for the Allied Forces, only then did he learn that his family home had been burned to the ground by the invading Russian forces. He could not go back home. He remained in Scotland until 1956. After working in coal mines, farms, and later becoming a painter with his own company, Wally decided it was time to try a new country and came to Chicago, barely missing sailing on the ship destined not to arrive in this new country. Wally Pieszka is a Polish man but yet an American man, with more lives than the proverbial cat. His life in America found permanent employment as a right-hand assistant to the President of the Wrigley Company in Chicago and that led to his meeting and marrying the love of his life, Mary. While some of Wally's memories have gaps, this book is being completed as Wally approaches his 95th year. While some of these names and events have faded, no stories here were embellished. If he didn't remember, it does not appear. This is Wally's story.

Lucy, a strong-willed girl from a wealthy family, was brought up on the English-Welsh border and married a Caribbean plantation owner, Sam Lord, for love, meanwhile he married her for her fortune, at a time when a woman was a chattel and everything she had, including her children, became her husband's. Abused and imprisoned in Barbados, she escaped with the help of enslaved people. A vibrant intimate description of early 19th-century life - giving birth at sea, braving disease and cruelty, and witnessing the abject misery of slavery - this is a story of courage in adversity, a runaway marriage to an unfaithful husband and a descent from a life of pampered luxury to a struggle for survival in a far-off land.

Book Description
Wondering if science could explain how he survived his 40-year avalanche of drugs and alcohol, Ozzy Osbourne became one of a handful of people in the world to have his entire DNA mapped in 2010. It was a highly complex, $65,000 process, but the results were conclusive: Ozzy is a genetic anomaly. The "Full Ozzy Genome" contained variants that scientists had never before encountered and the findings were presented at the prestigious TEDMED Conference in San Diego-making headlines around the world. The procedure was in part sponsored by The Sunday Times of London, which had already caused an international fururoe by appointing Ozzy Osbourne its star health advice columnist. The newpaper argued that Ozzy's mutliple near-death experiences, 40-year history of drug abuse, and extreme hypocondria qualified him more than any other for the job. The column was an overnight hit, being quickly picked up by Rolling Stone to give it a global audience of millions. In Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy, Ozzy answers reader's questions with his outrageous wit and surprising wisdom, digging deep into his past to tell the memoir-style survival stories never published before-and offer guidance that no sane human being should follow. Part humor, part memoir, and part bad advice, Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy will include some of the best material from his published columns, answers to celebrities' medical questions, charts, sidebars, and more.

Book Description
When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2001, I was frozen in time. At that time, the only thing I knew about any cancer, is that if you have it, you die. I agonized over things like, am I going to dwindle away and die a painful death? How do I tell my kids? Do I have enough time to get things in order? Who will take care of my husband? My mind went on and on. I looked for someone to talk to who had been diagnosed with my stage of cancer. When I couldn't find any, I thought the worst. I was told that once people go through their ordeal with cancer, they don't want to talk about it. I got on my knees and promised God that if he got me through this, I would become that voice. Well he kept his end of the bargain, and I'm keeping mine. But the stories in this book are not just about me; they are about people who have fought and won their battles with every type and stage of cancer. In talking to them, I learned so much. The trauma one goes through from the beginning of the diagnosis to the end of the treatments makes it understandable that people want to forget it once it's over. But the people in this book wanted to share their stories to let anyone going through this to know it is not a death sentence, and more important-there is life after cancer! Belief in God, positive thinking, and a strong support system will see you through any trial. The stories in this book are also about the people who stand with us and fight for us in the battle against cancer. Without them, we wouldn't survive. So when you read these stories, look at not only the type of cancer they survived, but also the faith, love, and support they had. In some cases you will see how cancer changed their life for the better. So look at their lives post-cancer. Look at their strong, loving support system. When you feel depressed or feel like giving up, pick up this book and read one of the many inspirational stories. You'll learn not to be afraid of cancer; only be afraid if you don't do something about it. Then I guarantee, you too can become not just a survivor, but a Cancer Kickin' Warrior!

Book Description
In 1943, sixteen-year-old Paul Steinberg was arrested in Paris and deported to Auschwitz. A chemistry student, Steinberg was assigned to work in the camp's laboratory alongside Primo Levi, who would later immortalize his fellow inmate as "Henri," the ultimate survivor, the paradigm of the prisoner who clung to life at the cost of his own humanity. "One seems to glimpse a human soul," Levi wrote in Survival in Auschwitz, "but then Henri's sad smile freezes in a cold grimace, and here he is again, intent on his hunt and his struggle; hard and distant, enclosed in armor, the enemy of all." Now, after fifty years, Steinberg speaks for himself. In an unsparing act of self-examination, he traces his passage from artless adolescent to ruthless creature determined to do anything to live. He describes his strategies of survival: the boxing matches he staged for the camp commanders, the English POWs he exploited, the maneuvers and tactics he applied with cold competence. Ultimately, he confirms Levi's judgment: "No doubt he saw straight. I probably was that creature, prepared to use whatever means I had available." But, he asks, "Is it so wrong to survive?" Brave and rare, Speak You Also is an unprecedented response to those dreadful events, bringing us face-to-face with the most difficult questions of humanity and survival.

Book Description
***Shortlisted for the Great Outdoors Book of the Year*** Surviving in the wild takes a great deal of strength. Often faced with frozen tundra, sweltering deserts, humid jungles, perilous mountains and fast-flowing rivers, Megan Hine is no stranger to perilous conditions. Whilst leading expeditions and bushcraft survival courses and in her work on television shows such as Bear Gryll's Mission Survive and Running Wild, she has explored the corners of the globe in pursuit of adventure. Faced with the toughest of conditions: bad weather; lack of food and being in the presence of predators, is the ultimate test of character and often the biggest challenge to overcome is in the head. In these situations, the human brain is simultaneously the greatest asset and biggest liability. Not everyone is suited to the great outdoors and when danger calls many aren't as well-equipped to survive, no amount of top of the range kit will save you if you don't have the right frame of mind. Here Megan Hine examines the human ability and instinct for survival, showing us how others have developed the attitudes and attributes to thrive in the most dangerous situations, and how those same attitudes and attributes help them confront problems and obstacles at work and at home. Being chased through the jungle by armed opium farm guards, abseiling past bears and lighting fires with tampons, Megan has seen and done it all. In Mind of a Survivor she takes you along for a series of life-and-death adventures and shows you what happens to people when they are pushed to their limits. Inspirational rather than instructional, Megan examines the human ability and instinct for survival sharing the life tools that she uses and showing how they can as easily be applied to more domestic everyday life - from careers to relationships, from overcoming adversity to decision making. Filled with her own experiences, Mind of a Survivor is packed full of adventure and can help people survive in any situation and cope with whatever life throws at them.
