The book deals with Mongolian loanwords in the Kipchak Turkic languages Tatar and Bashkir of the Volga area. After the sudden rise of the Chingisid Empire, Middle Mongolian exerted a vehement influence on the languages spoken in the subdued territories. This was the case even in the north-western most part of the empire. Tatar and Bashkir borrowed numerous Middle Mongolian words that reflect the culture of the Mongols of that age. In the following centuries, this vocabulary underwent significant changes in phonetics, morphology, semantics, and stylistic values. Middle Mongolian is reflected differently even in the languages of the socalled Altaic family. The author examines changes on both the Mongolian and the Kipchak side. The material provides valuable data that document important processes of the language history of the region. The book tries to capture characteristic elements of a language contact that has resulted in a variety of substantial loans belonging to many different semantic layers.

"Long-distance oceanic and overland trade along the Eurasian landmass in the 1400s was largely dominated by Chinese, Indian, and Arabic traders and predominantly conducted over short trajectories by sole traders or organized around small-scale enterprises. Yet, within two centuries of Europeans' arrival in the Indian Ocean in 1498, long-distance trade throughout Eurasia was mainly taken over by them. By 1700, they had formed new, large-scale, and impersonal organizations, primarily a joint-stock business corporation between English East India Company (EIC) and Dutch East India Company (VOC). This allowed them to transform trade from an enterprise dominated by many small traders moving goods over short segments to a vertically integrated firm that was able to control goods from their origin to the end consumers. This rise of the business corporation proved essential for the economic rise of Europe. Why did the corporation arise indigenously only in Europe, and given its effective organization of long-distance trade, why wasn't it mimicked by other Eurasian civilizations for 300 years? Harris closely examines the role played by forms of organization in the transformation of Eurasian trade between 1400 and 1700, comparing the organizational forms that were used in four major civilizations: Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Western European. Through this comparative perspective, he argues that the organizational design of the EIC and VOC, the first long-lasting joint-stock corporations, enabled large-scale multilateral impersonal cooperation for the first time in human history. He also argues that this new organizational form enabled the English and Dutch to deploy more capital, more ships, more voyages, and more agents than other organizational forms"--

This monograph dicsusses phonetic, morphological and semantic features of the ‘Altaic’ Sprachbund (i.e. Turkic, Mongolic and Tungusic) elements in Yeniseian languages (Kott, Assan, Arin, Pumpokol, Yugh and Ket), a rather heterogeneous language family traditionally classified as one of the ‘Paleo-Siberian’ language groups, that are not related to each other or to any other languages on the face of the planet. The present work is based on a database of approximately 230 Turkic and 70 Tungusic loanwords. A smaller number of loanwords are of Mongolic origin, which came through either the Siberian Turkic languages or the Tungusic Ewenki languages. There are clear linguistic criteria, which help to distinguish loanwords borrowed via Turkic or Tungusic and not directly from Mongolic languages. One of the main outcomes of this research is the establishment of the Yeniseian peculiar features in the Altaic loanwords. The phonetic criteria comprise the regular disappearance of vowel harmony, syncope, amalgamation, aphaeresis and metathesis. Besides, a separate group of lexemes represents hybrid words, i.e. the lexical elements where one element is Altaic and the other one is Yeniseian. This book presents a historical-etymological survey of a part of the Yeniseian lexicon, which provides an important part of the comparative database of Proto-Yeniseian reconstructions.

Tuvan is one of the archaic Turkic languages. A powerful Mongolic influence means that it possibly also has more Mongolic elements than other Turkic languages. Results of the present work are based on a database of approximately 1500 Mongolic loanwords. After confirming the Mongolic origin of these words in Tuvan, etymological, phonetical and morphological aspects are listed to assure, when and from which Mongolian language the loanword was taken. The study demonstrates the powerful Mongolic influence on Tuvan and establishes what linguistic criteria are available to characterize and classify the Mongolic loanwords. Accordingly an earlier and a later layer are distinguished. The later layer further comprises three groups of loanwords, the Buryat, Khalkha and Oirat ones.
