Book Description
Excerpt from The American Republic and Its Government: An Analysis of the Government of the United States It is the purpose of this book and of its companion volume, Political Parties and Party Problems in the United States, to attempt an addition to the works designed for the encouragement of the study of American politics. This volume has to do with the original principles of the Republic as announced by the Fathers in the struggle for Independence, and with the principal institutions and organs of government created by the Constitution. The greater part of this field has been traversed by many writers, and its principal subjects arc treated of by all text-books on Civil Government. Most of the textbooks in Civics, however, have been, at least until very recently, class-room hand-books dealing very briefly and disconnectedly with a large variety of topics, and designed for young students in the first year of the high school, or below. Mr. Bryce's great work, The American Commonwealth, has done much during the last decade for the promotion of political education among American students and readers; and in our institutions of higher learning, where elective courses of considerable length are offered in political science and the study of the American Government, it has been indispensable, as it will probably continue to be in its special field for a generation to come. Book Description
Politics without principles is an empty suit. The men who wrote the Constitution designed a government aimed at resolving divergent sectional and commercial interests. In the process, they created institutions that served to balance two competing forces in American life: liberty and equality. To achieve this equilibrium, the founding fathers incorporated multiple principles into the Constitution, their blueprint for American government and society. These principles reflect how political authority should be allocated, how the economy should be organized, how the legal system operated, and how American society should function. In turn, the Framers hoped these principles would frame the policies on which government action and laws would unfold. This essay describes that structure: achieving a balance between liberty and equality; identifying the principles and evolution through which this equilibrium has been achieved; and, the policies that translate these principles into action.

Book Description
Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Book Description
Stanley Fish is an equal opportunity antagonist. A theorist who has taken on theorists, an academician who has riled the academy, a legal scholar and political pundit who has ruffled feathers left and right, Fish here turns with customary gusto to the trouble with principle. Specifically, Fish has a quarrel with neutral principles. The trouble? They operate by sacrificing everything people care about to their own purity. And they are deployed with equal highmindedness and equally absurd results by liberals and conservatives alike. In this bracing book, Fish argues that there is no realm of higher order impartiality--no neutral or fair territory on which to stake a claim--and that those who invoke one are always making a rhetorical and political gesture. In the end, it is history and context, the very substance against which a purportedly abstract principle defines itself, that determines a principle's content and power. In the course of making this argument, Fish takes up questions about academic freedom and hate speech, affirmative action and multiculturalism, the boundaries between church and state, and much more. Sparing no one, he shows how our notions of intellectual and religious liberty--cherished by those at both ends of the political spectrum--are artifacts of the very partisan politics they supposedly transcend. The Trouble with Principle offers a provocative challenge to the debates of our day that no intellectually honest citizen can afford to ignore.

Book Description
Excerpt from The American Republic and Its Government: An Analysis of the Government of the United States With a view to this larger study of American politics, and as leading up to it, it seems to me necessary to recog nize that between the field for the elementary text-books in Civics and that of the advanced classes in the universi ties that call for special and extensive study in works like that of Mr. Bryce, there is an intermediate field. My effort has been to fill this gap, to provide an intermediate book for advanced courses ln-high schools or for elemen tary courses in the colleges. It is believed that in this field of Civics there are classes of students well prepared for more advanced work than is ordinarily pursued in high schools, whose interest will be more easily and effectively aroused and sustained by a somewhat elaborate discussion of the more important subjects in the study of the American Government and its principles. For this purpose it seems better to present more extensive treatment of fewer subjects than to reconsider the great variety of miscellaneous topics usually contained in the books on elementary Civics.
