Book Description
"The Time-Traveling Telescope" tells the fascinating story of Lily, a smart and interested girl who can't get enough of learning new things and going on exciting adventures. Lily finds an interesting old telescope hidden in her family's closet, which is where the story starts. There's something special about this telescope: it can take its owner back in time. Lily takes advantage of this amazing chance and starts a series of amazing experiences that take her to a different time period and let her not only watch but also fully experience important historical events. Lily meets dinosaurs, sees the beauty of Ancient Egypt, deals with the problems of medieval life, sails with explorers during the Age of Discovery, feels the passion of the American Revolution, is amazed by the inventions of the Industrial Revolution, celebrates the Wright brothers' first flight, and sees the amazing event of the moon landing. Lily meets historical people from different times and learns about the events that changed the world from their own point of view. These meetings are more than just idle observations; they are active experiences in which Lily often contributes to the creation of historical stories by helping or learning new things that change how she sees the past. Lily's time-traveling adventures help her learn a lot about the past of people. She sees that the past is a patchwork of people's battles, victories, and strong wills. She knows that history is not a list of times and events, but a living story of people and events that are linked together. In addition to learning about history, Lily also learns values like bravery, curiosity, and kindness, which show how each person's actions affect the journey of all people. "The Time-Traveling Telescope" is more than just a fun trip through time. It's also an educational trip that shows how complicated history is and how humanity is woven through it all. Lily's journey makes people want to learn more about history and see how they fit into the story of humanity as a whole. It also serves as a motivating reflection of all the amazing things that can happen when we study our past. Chapter 1: What They Found Lily found something that changed her life in a hidden corner of her old family home that was haunted by ghosts and the secrets of the people who had lived there in the past. Lily chose to look around in the attic on a calm, sunny afternoon when dust particles were dancing in the air like small, quiet fireworks. There were things that had been forgotten all around them. History was spread out on the furniture like soft old blankets, and memories were kept in boxes. As she climbed the wooden stairs that were creaky, she felt a rush of adventure that made her heartbeat fast with excitement. The attic was a real treasure trove of strange things. There were shadows everywhere, and the air smelled like old books and leather. Lily saw something strange among the things from her family's past. Under a stack of yellow maps and old, worn-out leather-bound books, she found a telescope. This was not your normal telescope, though. It was old, with a bronze body covered in beautiful carvings and a weight that seemed heavy with secrets and stories. As she wiped off the dust, the telescope gave off a strange, ghostly light, as if it had woken up from a deep sleep and recognized its new friend. Lily carefully pointed the telescope towards the attic window because she was as interested in seeing the world through its amazing lens as she was in exploring the sky. But something strange happened when she quickly looked through it. The attic started to blur and fade, and in its place came the bright clarity of a different place and time. The old boxes and dirty air were gone. Lily was invited on a trip that was even better than she had hoped for. It was like the telescope had opened a door to another world. At this very moment, Lily started a trip through time that would show her the amazing sights and sounds of the past. She was given the strange old telescope as a new guardian, and the two of them would go on adventures to faraway places and times long ago. Lily was about to start a unique educational trip that would take her from the lush, wild wilderness of prehistoric Earth to the beauty of ancient civilizations, and from the risky adventures of the Age of Discovery to the inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution.

Book Description
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has operated continuously since 1990. During that time, four space shuttle-based service missions were launched, three of which added major observational capabilities. A fifth â€" SM-4 â€" was intended to replace key telescope systems and install two new instruments. The loss of the space shuttle Columbia, however, resulted in a decision by NASA not to pursue the SM-4 mission leading to a likely end of Hubble's useful life in 2007-2008. This situation resulted in an unprecedented outcry from scientists and the public. As a result, NASA began to explore and develop a robotic servicing mission; and Congress directed NASA to request a study from the National Research Council (NRC) of the robotic and shuttle servicing options for extending the life of Hubble. This report presents an assessment of those two options. It provides an examination of the contributions made by Hubble and those likely as the result of a servicing mission, and a comparative analysis of the potential risk of the two options for servicing Hubble. The study concludes that the Shuttle option would be the most effective one for prolonging Hubble's productive life.

Book Description
From September 2007 to June 2008 the Space Studies Board conducted an international public seminar series, with each monthly talk highlighting a different topic in space and Earth science. The principal lectures from the series are compiled in Forging the Future of Space Science. The topics of these events covered the full spectrum of space and Earth science research, from global climate change, to the cosmic origins of life, to the exploration of the Moon and Mars, to the scientific research required to support human spaceflight. The prevailing messages throughout the seminar series as demonstrated by the lectures in this book are how much we have accomplished over the past 50 years, how profound are our discoveries, how much contributions from the space program affect our daily lives, and yet how much remains to be done. The age of discovery in space and Earth science is just beginning. Opportunities abound that will forever alter our destiny.

'Sarah Cruddas is a gifted writer and Look Up is an inspired book. I am hopeful that we will never stop looking up.' Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins Most of us have never been to space. To date, of the more than 100 billion humans that have ever existed, fewer than 600 humans have ever left Earth. But the exploration of space is the most significant thing we will ever do as a species. Sarah Cruddas has been looking to the skies her entire life. Her childhood was spent staring at the Moon and hearing stories of the space race, and she worked in a fruit factory to fund her love of the subject. Her subsequent career studying astrophysics, and becoming a television host and space journalist has seen her report on space exploration and chase launches across the world. In Look Up Sarah explains why she has always been a passionate advocate for why space should matter - to everyone. From our ancestors who first painted patterns of the stars in caves, to the US and Soviet pioneers who first forged a path beyond our planet, Sarah Cruddas explores the stories and sacrifices that humankind has made to understand more about our place in the universe. And even today, when Moon walking and people in space suits seem less relevant to us than climate change and conflicts here on Earth, she shows how everything from medicine to mobile phones is affected by space technology, and how a new generation of entrepreneurs have kick-started a new story with the stars. This is an inspirational and enlightening introduction to the importance of space to everyone, and why we should all learn to Look Up.

The story of the people who see beyond the stars—an astronomy book for adults still spellbound by the night sky. Humans from the earliest civilizations through today have craned their necks each night, using the stars to orient themselves in the large, strange world around them. Stargazing is a pursuit that continues to fascinate us: from Copernicus to Carl Sagan, astronomers throughout history have spent their lives trying to answer the biggest questions in the universe. Now, award-winning astronomer Emily Levesque shares the stories of modern-day stargazers in this new nonfiction release, the people willing to adventure across high mountaintops and to some of the most remote corners of the planet, all in the name of science. From the lonely quiet of midnight stargazing to tall tales of wild bears loose in the observatory, The Last Stargazers is a love letter to astronomy and an affirmation of the crucial role that humans can and must play in the future of scientific discovery. Book Description
A majestic account of the most fascinating phenomena in our universe—and the science behind them. In this vibrant, eye-opening tour of milestones in the history of our universe, Chris Impey guides us through space and time, leading us from the familiar sights of the night sky to the dazzlingly strange aftermath of the Big Bang. What if we could look into space and see not only our place in the universe but also how we came to be here? As it happens, we can. Because it takes time for light to travel, we see more and more distant regions of the universe as they were in the successively greater past. Impey uses this concept—"look-back time"—to take us on an intergalactic tour that is simultaneously out in space and back in time. Performing a type of cosmic archaeology, Impey brilliantly describes the astronomical clues that scientists have used to solve fascinating mysteries about the origins and development of our universe. The milestones on this journey range from the nearby to the remote: we travel from the Moon, Jupiter, and the black hole at the heart of our galaxy all the way to the first star, the first ray of light, and even the strange, roiling conditions of the infant universe, an intense and volatile environment in which matter was created from pure energy. Impey gives us breathtaking visual descriptions and also explains what each landmark can reveal about the universe and its history. His lucid, wonderfully engaging scientific discussions bring us to the brink of modern cosmology and physics, illuminating such mind-bending concepts as invisible dimensions, timelessness, and multiple universes. A dynamic and unforgettable portrait of the cosmos, How It Began will reward its readers with a deeper understanding of the universe we inhabit as well as a renewed sense of wonder at its beauty and mystery.

Book Description
Could “UFOs” and “Aliens” simply be us, but from the future? This provocative new book cautiously examines the premise that extraterrestrials may instead be our distant human descendants, using the anthropological tool of time travel to visit and study us in their own hominin evolutionary past. Dr. Michael P. Masters, a professor of biological anthropology specializing in human evolutionary anatomy, archaeology, and biomedicine, explores how the persistence of long-term biological and cultural trends in human evolution may ultimately result in us becoming the ones piloting these disc-shaped craft, which are likely the very devices that allow our future progeny to venture backward across the landscape of time. Moreover, these extratempestrials are ubiquitously described as bipedal, large-brained, hairless, human-like beings, who communicate with us in our own languages, and who possess technology advanced beyond, but clearly built upon, our own. These accounts, coupled with a thorough understanding of the past and modern human condition, point to the continuation of established biological and cultural trends here on Earth, long into the distant human future.
