Book Description
Excerpt from A Study of Factors Measured by the Thorndike Intelligence Examination for High School Graduates In his well-known two-factor theory Spearman (26) has maintained that cognitive (roughly, intellectual) functions have in common a general factor, which he characterizes as g. The fact that positive correlations are usually obtained be tween measurements of mental abilities is attributed by him to this common factor. However, these correlations are never equal to because, in addition. To errors of measurement, each mental function possesses a certain set of specific factors which by definition do not correlate with the specific factors of another function nor with the g factor. According to Spearman, then, an individual's score on any mental test, say the Thorndike Examination, would be determined partly by the amount of g entering into his mental abilities manifested throughout the examination and partly by factors specific to each particular mental task he performs on the various tests.
