Excerpt: ...I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is "As a new manufacture, the coloring-matter or dyestutf obtained from the reactions of nitro-napbthylamine and beta-naphthol, sub stantially in the manner set forth, or by any other method which will produce a like result." The Coal Tar Colors. At the meeting of the chemical section of the Society of Arts, Mr. W. H. Perkin, F. R. S., read the first part of a paper on " The History of Alizarine and Allied Coloring Matters, and their Productions from Coal Tar." In this he gave abrief account of madder and its applications to calico printing, Turkey red dyeing, &c., and then proceeded to treat alizarine and purpurine, the coloring matters of madder. He then gave ahistory of the discovery of their artificial production from anthraeene, a hydrocarbon from coal tar, and the new processes by which it had been found possible to manufacture thcse bodies on the large scale, as well as the allied coloring matter, such as anthrapurpurin, &c. ' The subject was illustrated with experiments and specimens of the products referred to, as well as patterns dyed with the various coloring matters. The reading of the second part of the paper has been postponed to another occasion, when the history of the practical methods of carrying out this important manufacture will be dealt with.--C'hemical News.
