Book Description
Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted. Excerpt from The Age of Tennyson Edited There is nothing left remarkable Beneath the visiting moon.' Hence in the beginning of the period there is on the part of all but the greatest a tendency to trifle. Sometimes even the greatest are not quite free from it; and in the early poetry of Tennyson we may detect evidence that the writer was as yet unmoved by any great interest. Book Description
Excerpt from Tennyson Accident of his hour, the call Of his age, which made Tennyson a philo sophic poet. He was naturally not only a pure lover of beauty, but a pure lover of beauty in a much more peculiar and distinguished sense even than a man like Keats, or a man like Robert Bridges. He gave us scenes Of Nature that cannot easily be surpassed, but he chose them like a landscape painter rather than like a religious poet. Above all, he exhibited his abstract love of the beautiful in one most personal and characteristic fact. He was never so successful or so triumphant as when he was describing not Nature, but art. He could describe a statue as Shelley could describe a cloud. He was at his very best in describing buildings, in their blending of aspiration and exactitude. He found to perfection the harmony between the rhythmic recurrences of poetry and the rhythmic recurrences Of architecture. His description, for example, Of the Palace of Art is a thing entirely Victorious and unique. The whole edifice, as. Book Description
Excerpt from Tennyson: A Critical Study For the existence of this book my publishers must be responsible. It seems to me impossible to say anything that is at once new and true about Tennyson. But, having undertaken to write a critical study of him, it seemed to me best to give, as clearly as I could, my own point of view, and for that reason I have abstained from extending my knowledge of the many books which have been written about him by admirable critics. Contemporary criticism of his earlier poems I have studied primarily for its historical interest, and in the process of illustrating it by quotations, I have had to expose my own work to very damaging comparisons. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Tennyson Studies in Tennyson, written at different times, and now revised, enlarged, and reprinted. The doing of this revision has been a curious experience. I find that the youthful enthusiasm of my first pas sion for his work has cooled a little, so that some of the expressions of it need to be moderated. But my conviction of his lofty rank as a poet has not changed except to grow stronger. And the impres sion of his personality, so large and noble, so manly, strong, and free, so vigorously alive to all the manifold aspects of human life, so firm in his loyalties and liberal in his sympathies, so great a lover of nature, humanity, and God, -that vivid impression has. Not faded but deepened, since last I saw him in those late summer days at Aldworth, twenty-seven years ago. In the long interval what vast mutations have passed upon the surface of earthly things! What hideous warfare hath been waged, What kingdoms overthrown! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
