Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Religion When we look about us to-day we are appalled at the evils that have crept into human society. The world is just passing through a crisis brought on by materialistic thought. These post-bellum times are called the reconstruction period. The great moral forces of the day are seeking a remedy for the ills of society. Thoughtful men are beginning to realize that religion is the only cure for those ills. N ow more than ever, perhaps, they are convinced that human society must be guided by a higher principle than mere human statutes. This principle must be divine law expressed in terms of religion that operates in men's lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Teach Religion It aims to state in a clear, simple, and non-technical way some of the funda mental principles oi education and then to show how these may be made use of in the teaching of religion. No doubt, in aiming at a popular state ment of these principles we have lost something in technical accuracy, but we have preferred to be understood by those for whom we have written than to be commended for strictly professional vir tues by those who may never read our book. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Concerning the Christian Life He was right. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus: In Eighteen Sections I cannot anticipate a large number of readers, for it is the unhappy delusion of the Church that it knows the teaching of Jesus. Possibly, if I were to give the book a true but sensational title, The Revolution of Theology, the Church would pay attention to it. On the other hand, men of the world have small interest in the teaching of Jesus because they have not marked the distinction be tween it and the teaching of the Church. Hear the Church has been the cry of centuries. They have done so. Hear Him is, I would fain hope, the cry of this book. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Religious Teaching Religious pedagogy is one of the newer branches of the sci ence of education. Despite the fact that teaching was made central by the Founder of Christianity both in his practice and in the Great Commission to his disciples and the further fact that many of the most notable achievements of the church through the ages have been due to the faithful exercise of this central function, modern church leaders, until very recent years, have given scant attention to the development of the princi ples and technique of religious teaching. Rapid progress has been made during the last two decades, but much pioneer work yet remains to be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Christ The declaration with which this introductory study is prefaced was made by impartial, and probably, indifferent men, after listening to some of the things that Jesus said. Earlier in the chapter we find this statement: "The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning Him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take Him." The outcome was - "The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring Him? The officers answered, Never man so spake." I make use of these words of the officers, whatever they intended by them, as a declaration of my conviction that the words of Christ were not the words of a merely human teacher. My purpose in this series of meditations is to consider His teaching on some of the great themes of supreme interest to men, and I propose to do that in the simplest way possible. Let it be understood that we start on the assumption that the New Testament view of the Person of Christ is to be accepted as true. I am not proposing a study of the words of Jesus, in order to lead to Christ. I rather desire to lead those who have already found Christ to a study of His words.
