Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States The paper used in the book is thick, the type large. Words and phrases to which the author desires to call special attention are printed in italic characters, and as more than half the book is, in the author's eyes, important, more than half the book is printed in italics. In 1788, when Nicholas Pike published his arithmetic, Greenwood's book was entirely unknown, and Pike's was believed to be the first arith metic written and printed in America. The first arithmetic which enjoyed general popularity and reached an extended circulation in the colonies was the School-master's Assistant, by Thomas Dilworth. The first edition of this was published in London in 1744 or '45. According to Wickersham, there appeared a reprint of this in Philadelphia in 1769. Other American editions were brought out at Hartford in 1786, New York in 1793 and 1806, Brooklyn in 1807. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Elementary Mathematics: With Hints on Methods of Teaching In the preparation of this history, I have made extensive use of the works of Cantor, Hankel, Unger, De Morgan, Pea cock, Gow, Allman, Loria, and of other prominent writers On the history of mathematics. Original sources have been consulted, whenever opportunity has presented itself. It gives me much pleasure to acknowledge the assistance ren dered by the United States Bureau of Education, in. For warding for examination a number of old text-books which otherwise would have been inaccessible to me. It should also be said that a large number of passages in this book are taken, with only slight alteration, from my History of Mathematics, Macmillan co., 1895. Some parts of the present work are, therefore, not independent of the earlier one. It has been my privilege to have my manuscript read by two scholars of well-known ability, - Dr. G. B. Halsted of the University of Texas, and Professor F. H. Loud of Colorado College. Through their suggestions and corrections many infelicities in language and several inaccuracies of statement have disappeared. Valuable assistance in proof-reading has been rendered by Professor Loud, by Mr. P. E. Doudna, formerly Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Wis consin, and by Mr. F. K. Bailey, a student in Colorado College. I extend to them my sincere thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics Perhaps no subject is so directly in the flux of the instability of things as mathematics. For cen turies this subject has held the unenviable reputa tion of being tortuous; yet man, because of his un ending need of the subject, has endured silently. It has been one of the necessary evils of life, yet, did man but know it, wonderfully full of beauty in its symmetry and exactness. Indispensible to the man who builds, to the man who barters, to the man who meditates, it has ever been shrouded with a mantle of mysticism. One might say with truth that they who have the greatest need of the find ings of mathematical investigation have the smallest Opportunity to acquire a knowledge of them. Book Description
Excerpt from A Study of Mathematical Education Including the Teaching of Arithmetic This study is based upon twenty years' experience Of school and college education ranging through all grades, including the very elements of counting and form in the kindergarten, the mathematics appropriate to the school, and the standard required Of students for an Honours Degree in our universities. Conclusions based on class-teaching and those arrived at by experiment and by a private study Of the individual have served both to correct and to supplement each other. The substance of the present volume has also formed the introductory part Of a course of lectures on the teaching of mathematics, which, for many years, I have given in various institutions to classes of teachers from almost all types and grades Of schools, elementary as well as secondary and tertiary.
