Book Description
The Tale of Rusty Wren: Large Print By Arthur Scott Bailey A PLEASANT HOME Now, Rusty Wren had found-and shown to his wife-a hollow apple tree and a hole in a fence-rail, either of which he thought would make a pleasant place in which to live. But since the little couple were house wrens, Rusty's wife said she thought that they oughtn't to be so far from the farmhouse. "Why not build our nest behind one of the shutters?" she suggested. But Rusty shook his head quickly-and with decision. "That won't do," said he. "Somebody might come to the window and close the shutter; and then our nest would fall to the ground. And if we happened to have six or eight eggs in it, you know you wouldn't like that very well." Rusty's wife agreed with him on that point. But she still insisted that she wanted to live near the farmhouse; and she said that she expected her husband to find a good spot for their nest, for she certainly wasn't going to spend the summer in a hole in a fence-rail, or in an old apple tree, either. Rusty Wren saw at once that there was no sense in arguing with her. If he wanted any peace, he knew that he might as well forget the old hollow apple tree and the hole in the fence-rail too. He had better forget them and resume his search for a home. So he gave his plump little cinnamon-colored body a shake and held his tail at even a higher angle than usual, just to show people that he was going to be the head of the house-when they should have one. Then with a flirt of his short, round wings he hurried over to Farmer Green's dooryard-after calling to his wife that he would come back and tell her if he had any luck. Book Description
This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. His novels and short stories mostly deal with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion. Table of Contents: The Novels SNAKE AND SWORD THE WAGES OF VIRTUE DRIFTWOOD SPARS CUPID IN AFRICA (The Baking of Bertram in Love and War) Short Stories STEPSONS OF FRANCE Ten little Legionaries À la Ninon de L'Enclos An Officer and—a Liar The Dead Hand The Gift The Deserter Five Minutes "Here are Ladies" The MacSnorrt "Belzébuth" The Quest "Vengeance is Mine..." Book Description
Wren Larkin has a lot of things working against him-too tall, too thin, and living in a house that looks like an old boot. His only friends are a group of noisy crows that are always bringing him random trinkets. Needless to say, he's not the most popular kid in town. But things change when a girl named Maria moves to town and instantly befriends Wren. She continues to do the unexpected when she defends Rusty, the resident bad boy, who might not be as rebellious as Wren thought. Wren learns that it isn't just coincidence that brought the three of them together when he discovers a shoe workshop under the heel of his house that's holding-or hiding--three pairs of magical shoes intended for each of them. When strangers arrive on Wren's doorstep looking for the shoes, Wren and his new companions have no choice but to flee to Underfoot, an underground settlement full of magical creatures. In just a matter of days, Wren is immersed into a whole new reality that'll take him on an incredible journey and reveal a lineage that might be better left secret.

Book Description
Miriam Black is trying to live an ordinary life, keeping her ability to see how someone dies hidden...until a serial killer crosses her path. This is the second book in the Miriam Black series. “Visceral and often brutal, this tale vibrates with emotional rawness that helps to paint a bleak, unrelenting picture of life on the edge.” —Publishers Weekly Miriam is trying. Really, she is. But this whole “settling down thing” just isn’t working out. She lives on Long Beach Island all year in a run-down, double-wide trailer. She works at a grocery store as a checkout girl. And her relationship with Louis—who’s on the road half the time in his truck—is subject to the mood swings Miriam brings to everything she does. It just isn’t going well. Still, she’s keeping her psychic ability—to see when and how someone is going to die just by touching them—in check. But even that feels wrong somehow. Like she’s keeping a tornado stopped up in a tiny bottle. Then comes the one bad day that turns it all on her ear.
