As the presidential primaries of SDP and NRC heats up, criticisms of the Federal military government by prominent Nigerians like Enahoro, Obasanjo, Gani Fawehinmi, and Ken Saro-Wiwa, increased. As for the SDP, having played a fast one on Musa Shehu Ya'radua, MKO Abiola emerged as the presidential candidate while Baba Gana Kingibe and Atiku Abubakar came in second and third respectively. Sultan Dasuki, representing the Northern power brokers, and high-ranking officers of the Babagangida military government, were very uncomfortable with the emergence of Abiola.
