Excerpt from The Surface-History of the Earth The Surface History dealt with in this book is based directly upon two great recent advances in our knowledge of the earth's crust: the Radioactivity of the Rocks and Isostasy. The nature of both are herein discussed and explained. Both are recognized to-day by most men of science as facts. These two fundamental elements of the surface constitution of the globe lead naturally to certain great events which at long intervals are recurrent in the history of. The earth's surface. Such are (a) the slow advance of transgressional seas upon the continents; those seas in which the sandstones and limestones, &c., so common over all parts of the land surface, have been laid down (5) the retrogression of those seas taking place after many millions of years and then, finally, (6) the rising of the mountain ranges, built mainly of the sediments which were collected in the depths of the former continental waters. For the genesis of the mountains great lateral as well as vertical forces are required, and these also arise naturally out of those fundamental elements of surface structure: Radioactivity and Isostasy. In the course of this history we recognize eras of tensile crust - stresses changing gradually to eras of compressive stresses. Inter 4124 we find an explanation of the limited scale of the surface relief of the earth; of the causes which have controlled the allocation of land and water upon the globe; and of the major geographical relations of continents and oceans. Excerpt from Earth Science: A Physiography The introductory chapter gives a general idea of what has hap pened on the earth and what is going on now, so that the pupil is made aware of the aim of the entire subject. This is followed by a study of the materials of which the earth is made, rocks, and of the forces acting upon those materials. Having learned that much, the pupil is in a position to understand how these forces have modified the earth's surface and made it what it is today. The land is studied first, because pupils are more likely to know something about land, to begin with. It is for that reason they find land studies easier than the rest of the subject. This is followed by a short history of the earth, designed to teach the student how the earth came to its present condition. The chapter is optional, but the author feels that many of the better students will be eager to read it. The study of the land will probably occupy the first half of a year. The pupils who have successfully completed the first half will then study the earth's relations in space, seasons, latitude, longitude, time, the atmosphere and associated phenomena like weather and climate. And the year's work is brought to an end by the study of the sea with special emphasis on harbors. The text is printed in type of two sizes: larger type for the essential material and smaller for the Optional. Each chapter has a completion summary which the pupil is required to Copy and complete. This avoids the objection that many teachers have to the ordinary summary: that some pupils read only the summary. The completion summary acts as a self-test, for if the pupil is able to fill in the blanks, he knows that he has learned his lesson and this knowledge carries with it a sense of mastery and hence a feeling of satisfaction. At the end of each chapter are questions on every important point in the text and the teacher may well use these questions as a chief part of his assignment. Excerpt from The Caves of the Earth: Their Natural History, Features, and Incidents Caverns, differing endlessly in the detail, may be divided into three groups, each group being marked by a leading structural peculiarity. The first class are cavities, more or less narrow and prolonged, Open to the daylight at one extremity, and penetrating laterally or vertically the surface of the earth. The lateral direction is commonly followed, but the vertical is frequently met with. As an example of the latter, a yawning chasm in the limestone strata of the Peak of Derbyshire may be cited, locally called eldon-hole, formerly regarded as one of the wonders of that district, on account of its supposed unfathomable depth. Hobbes has celebrated it in Latin hexameters, and Cotton in rude English verse. Cotton endeavoured to ascertain its depth by a line from the brink, but without success, the weight of the rope being mistaken for the weight of the plummet, and hence suffered to descend1 coiling up at the bottom, or at a point where it was accidentally stopped. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
