A once famous philosopher named Montaigne warned that using oneself as the subject to write about is only pardonable when the person is famous and exceptional, and I am certainly not. However, I was motivated to write this book to relieve my conscience by sharing some of my most private thoughts about some of life’s most important topics with my family and friends since I failed to communicate with them adequately in person on these matters. It has always been easier for me to express such intimate thoughts in writing. Since I am now in my last stage of living life, I thought it was time to share my thoughts on what I believe is most important in living life and that is Religion, Philosophy (how to live life well), and Politics. I don’t believe that politics is that important to living a good life, but it has become such a divisive force in our world that I decided it was worth discussing. There are many writers and speakers concerning these topics that I have observed and contemplated over my many years. But my book relies heavily on the teachings of Jesus regarding my religious beliefs and the philosopher Montaigne in my discussion on living life well (or better). In the POLITICS section of the book, I highlight my thoughts and beliefs about the priorities, values, and perspective a Christian should consider when engaging in the political process. The essence of my book is to highlight my belief about what is the PURPOSE of our existence. I think most people are seeking the answer to this question--- For me, it is the struggle for Virtue.

"This book develops a contemporary model of spiritual struggle aimed at perpetual ascent to and in God. Spiritual struggle in this project, which ultimately shifts the emphasis from virtue's acquisition to its pursuit, is defined as the exertion of effort in all conceivable dimensions-physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual-with intent to attain a semblance of, knowledge of, and intimacy with Jesus Christ in community, for God and for others. Gregory of Nyssa's theory of epektasis assumes a basic three-tiered conception of perpetual ascent, beginning with purification and detachment from fleshly passions, strengthening the soul by increasing in similitude to God, and ending with unity with God, that is, with inexpressible and transformative experience of God. God-the infinite, the Good, and the Paragon of virtue-functions as the orienting principle of this perpetual ascent, mitigating the issues of the unity of the virtues and the self-centeredness and self-effacement of virtue. This book goes on to provide two of many potential concrete instantiations of this suggested model. The first is the application of this model to the body, which in turn will have implications for contemporary sexual ethics. A contemporary model of spiritual struggle shifts the emphasis from virtue’s acquisition to its pursuit Beyond Virtue Ethics offers a distinctive approach to virtue ethics, arguing not simply for the importance of “struggle” to virtue ethics, but that “struggle” itself is a manifestation of virtue. In doing this, Stephen M. Meawad offers a way of thinking about virtue not simply as a perfected state, but as a state that is to a greater or lesser degree a manifestation of the ideal itself, which is not attainable. Meawad affirms the concept of the unity of virtues—that is, the idea that a virtue is not a virtue unless united with other perfected virtues—which is found in God. Insofar as humans grow in unity with God, they too participate in the unity of virtues, although always to an imperfect extent. Meawad rejects a division between ethics and spirituality and provides two concrete examples of this suggested model. The first is the application of this model to the body and its implications for contemporary sexual ethics. The second is a reintegration of ethics and Scripture through the contemporary application of an ancient Patristic divine reading. Nearly two hundred years ago, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote what is considered to be the first major work of feminist political theory: A Vindication of the Rights of Women. Much has been written about this work, and about Wollstonecraft as the intellectual pioneer of feminism, but the actual substance and coherence of her political thought have been virtually ignored. Virginia Sapiro here provides the first full-length treatment of Wollstonecraft's political theory.
