Book Description
Excerpt from The Gun Book: For Boys and Men When man or boy becomes interested enough in firearms to want to know what sort of an instrument the gun really is, and how it performs its work, he is not made much the wiser by reading that: "A gun is a thermodynamic machine by which the potential energy of the explosive is converted into the kinetic energy of the projectile." Nor will the curious-minded beginner get much useful information on the subject by questioning poorly informed adults who may tell him, as they did the author in his youth, that the bullet does not "get up speed" until it is some distance from the muzzle; or that the missile does not begin to drop in obedience to gravity until late in its flight. Such misinformation takes on so many forms that the more of it the inquirer listens to the greater grows his bewilderment. Between these two extremes of overexactness buried in mysterious scientific terms, and of false theories carelessly uttered, the seeker for light on the elementary problems of gunnery suffers almost as much today as he ever did. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gun and Its Development This book, first published in 1881, was written with a view to supplying such information relative to fire-arms as is most frequently sought by a sportsman Owing to numerous recent inventions it became necessary not only to rearrange the matter, but to rewrite the book when the sixth edition was needed. The author thanks those critics who have pointed out literal faults in this book, and he has done his best to remove ambiguities and correct errors. He sees no reason to make any alteration of importance, and, in matters of Opinion, adheres to what he has already written, so that this ninth edition is, with the exception of a few minor alterations and some additional pages upon Gun Trials, Single Trigger mechanisms, Miniature rifles and the Rifle Club movement, practically a reprint of the last one. In the arrangement of this treatise the author has followed a method which appears to him the best suited to convey an accurate idea of different small arms and of their capabilities under varying conditions. From the nature of the subjects treated it is impossible that the book could be wholly free from technicalities, but no endeavour has been spared to make the contents readable intricate mechanisms, instead of being described in detail, have been freely illustrated; technical data are presented in tabular form, and theories relative to the action of explosives, the flight of bullets and shot pellets, have been concisely explained. The thanks of the author are due to many sportsmen and others who by their investigations and experience have added to his knowledge of guns and gunnery possibly in some instances the sources upon which the author has drawn have not been acknowledged, but the omissions are unintentional. Book Description
Excerpt from Servants of the Guns As the long troop train rumbled slowly over the water-logged wastes of Flanders, I sat in the corner of a carriage which was littered with all the debris of a twenty-four hour' journey and watched the fiery winter's sun set gorgeously. It was Christmas evening. Inevitably my mind went back to that other journey of sixteen months ago when we set forth so proudly, so exultantly to face the test of war. But how different, how utterly different is everything now! Last time, with the sun shining brilliantly from a cloudless sky and the French sentries along the line waving enthusiastically, we passed cheerfully through the pleasant land of France towards our destination on the frontier. Book Description
Excerpt from With the Guns As these sketches of the changing phases of modern war are largely concerned with the work of the artillery, as, indeed, they are written from the standpoint of that branch of the Service, this would seem to be a favourable place to explain shortly the significance of the arm. My excuse, if any be needed, may be sought in the mind of the average man who, terrified as ever of the contemplation of anything technical, puzzled by the grandiloquence of the self appointed expert, regards the art of the artilleryman as written in a book sealed to him for ever by its own abstruseness. Book Description
Excerpt from The Boy With the Guns They pile up the material out of which history will some day be constructed; they enable us in some measure to realize the passion of trial and suffering through which our boys have gone for us; with all their crudities and imperfections, they rise sometimes in their bald simplicity to epic dignity, and they afford insight into men tal and emotional penetralia of the deepest significance. Book Description
Excerpt from The Burial of the Guns She lived at an old place called Wood side, which had been in the family for a great many years; indeed, ever since before the Rev olution. The neighborhood dated back to the time of the colony, and Woodside was one of the old places. My cousin Fanny's grand mother had stood in the door of her chamber with her large scissors in her hand, and defied Tarleton's red-coated troopers to touch the basket of old communion-plate which she had hung on her arm.
