She began by dis coursing on the sermon of the previous Sunday but was soon preaching her own views quite vigorously. The town took sides and at last she was brought to trial before the ministers, condemned of heresy and banished. Btilliam Coddington was among her supporters who left Boston with her, and set out to find land in the new world where they might settle in peace. Plantations. Two hundred and fifty years have elapsed since he landed upon these shores; and the great principles which he annunciated and developed of civil and religious freedom, have come to be the foundation of every democratic republic in Christendom. The great civic anniversary, to which thousands are looking forward with quick ened zeal, will tend to bring out facts and illustrations pertaining to his early life and subsequent career, which have heretofore perhaps been obscure and unknown. The only thing that seems settled in regard to the early surroundings of Roger Williams is that he was of Welsh origin. It has always been supposed that he was of humble parentage, the place of his birth being unknown, and the date uncertain. It occurred to the writer during a recent vacation to make some investigations on this point, the clue having been furnished him by the late J. Wingate Thornton, Esq., of Boston. He first visited the rooms of the New England Historic- Genealogical Society, No. 18 Somerset Street, where, through the courtesy of the Librarian (all librarians are courteous), he was permitted to examine the "Publications of the Harleian Society," of London, consisting of a series of pedigrees and heralds' visitations. Excerpt from Roger Williams, the Prophetic Legislator: A Paper Read Before the Rhode Island Historical Society, November 8, 1871 IT will be my chief endeavor at this time to bring before you, not so much the story, as the character, the service, the idea, of Roger Williams. And in doing this, admitting such limitations as bound all human souls, and even acknowledging without re serve some things which seem errors, i shall try to show the relation of these also to his higher qualities, and to lead your minds especially to the unity which amidst all changes charac terizes his whole course. At the outset, however, it may not be improper to refer to the main facts - simply as facts - of his life. Here I have to repeat what history and' tradition report to us that he was born probably about the close of the sixteenth cen tury, in Wales; that he received an University training for the ministry of the Established Church; that after a short ministry within that church he was drawn into another connection that he followed the Puritan immigrants to Massachusetts Bay, join ing them in February, 1831 that in April of that year he became minister in Salem; that from Salem he removed to Plymouth the following August, remaining there about two years that in August, 1633, he returned to Salem, becoming on the death of Mr Skelton, in 1631, his successor in the ministry, and continu ing such until his removal by order of the General Court, in January, 1636.
