Book Description
Excerpt from The Stonemason and the Bricklayer Ike the companion volumes in the present series of works, designed for Home Study or self-instruction in the various departments of Industrial Work, the matter forming the major portion of the present volume appeared originally in the well-known serial entitled The Industrial self-instructor, under the two heads of The Stonemason and The Bricklayer. The leading departments of the two constructive arts were fully described and largely illustrated by a wide and extended range of diagrams in the text, supplemented with a series of full-page plates; but while of necessity many of the textual illustrations were only dia gramatic in character, these amply meeting the requirements of description of various points and principles of work - the illustrations for the most part were working drawings reduced and arranged from drawings and designs used in actual construction. These gave, therefore, an amount of practical information calculated to be of great value to the student. These have nearly all been reproduced in the present volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The 20th Century Bricklayer's and Mason's Assistant: Part One, the Bricklayer's Guide and Assistant; Part Two, the Stone Mason's Assistant While the mason, the worker in cut stone, is generally supposed to be a more skillful and a more artistic workman and as a rule takes precedence over the man who works in brick alone, I have in this work dared to reverse this order and devote the first part of this volume to enhance the interest of the worker in the more humble but certainly more useful material brick. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Masonry, Bricklaying and Plastering, Both Plain and Ornamental: Containing a New and Complete System of Lines for Stone-Cutting In submitting the present Volume to the Public, we have to offer our grateful acknowledgments for the very favourable reception which the previous work on Carpentry and Joinery has met with, and we feel much gratified in having been, in an eminent degree, successful in our endeavours to unfold and elucidate the scientific Principles and Practical Application of those Arts which have the object of employing Wood in the construction of Buildings: we now proceed to develope, in a similar manner, the scientific Frinciples and Practice of the Arts of Construction, using other materials, and particularly the important Arts of Masonry and Bricklaying, and also the Ornamental Art of Plastering. Our plan consists in separately treating the Arts of Construction, and elucidating them by grouping together those principal branches which have a natural relation to each other, and which require similar operations, and in which a workman in the one always has an advantage in knowing the principles of the others; and we are the more powerfully encouraged to proceed in it, by the knowledge that this plan is as new as it will be found useful, and we trust the Work itself will bear the palm, as well for originality and beauty, as for its practical utility. The nature of our Work will be more fully understood from the following short sketch of its plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Masons', Bricklayers' and Plasterers' Guide: A Book on the Art and Science of the Masons' Trade; Dedicated to the Bricklayers' and Masons' International Union of America and All Subordinate Unions We have found as a rule from our own experience as a mechanic, that when the workman' has ventured to pass his judgment in regard to the construction, and stability of certain kinds of work, pertaining to his art, in the pres ence of those who consider that they haveu been particu larly educated to possess such knowledge, that his opinion, rather than being received with respect by them as being of any reliable authority, was looked upon with rather a contemptuous good humor, and placing the mechanic in rathera ridiculous and humiliating position before those contemplating or erecting an edifice. Book Description
#1 New York Times Bestseller Oprah's Book Club Selection The “extraordinary . . . monumental masterpiece” (Booklist) that changed the course of Ken Follett’s already phenomenal career—and begins where its prequel, The Evening and the Morning, ended. “Follett risks all and comes out a clear winner,” extolled Publishers Weekly on the release of The Pillars of the Earth. A departure for the bestselling thriller writer, the historical epic stunned readers and critics alike with its ambitious scope and gripping humanity. Today, it stands as a testament to Follett’s unassailable command of the written word and to his universal appeal. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known . . . of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect—a man divided in his soul . . . of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame . . . and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state and brother against brother. A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett’s historical masterpiece.

Book Description
Two weeks after the United States officially entered World War I, Irish American "Bricklayer Bill" Kennedy won the Boston Marathon wearing his stars-and-stripes bandana, rallying the crowd of patriotic spectators. Kennedy became an American hero and, with outrageous stories of his riding the rails and sleeping on pool tables, a racing legend whose name has since appeared in almost every book written on the Boston Marathon. When journalist Patrick Kennedy and historian Lawrence Kennedy unearthed their uncle's unpublished memoir, they discovered a colorful character who lived a tumultuous life, beyond his multiple marathons. The bricklayer survived typhoid fever, a five-story fall, auto and train accidents, World War action, Depression-era bankruptcy, decades of back-breaking work, and his own tendency to tipple. In many ways, Bill typified the colorful, newly emerging culture and working-class ethic of competitive long-distance running before it became a professionalized sport. Bricklayer Bill takes us back to another time, when bricklayers, plumbers, and printers could take the stage as star athletes.
