Book Description
The classic tale of one man’s struggle with alcoholism, this revolutionary novel remains Charles Jackson’s best-known book—a daring autobiographical work that paved the way for contemporary addiction literature. It is 1936, and on the East Side of Manhattan, a would-be writer named Don Birnam decides to have a drink. And then another, and then another, until he’s in the midst of what becomes a five-day binge. The Lost Weekend moves with unstoppable speed, propelled by a heartbreaking but unflinching truth. It catapulted Charles Jackson to fame, and endures as an acute study of the ravages of alcoholism, as well as an unforgettable parable of the condition of the modern man.

Eddy is an ambitious teenager. He attends one of the most prestigious boy’s colleges on the island and has big dreams. The only problem is that he lives on the Beetham, and to be from the Beetham in Trinidad society means that you would always be considered the lowest of the low, no matter what you do. The stigma of crime, drugs, violence and poverty would always be associated with people from that area. Being the best friend of the son of one of the richest and most influential men in the business world certainly does not help. The two are like brothers until Brian almost loses his life and the hand of money hungry kidnappers. Brian’s mother Sally tries desperately to salvage a marriage that is already beyond repair. Her husband’s infidelity is not as frightening to her as the thought of her becoming a divorcee. Matt defines who she is in the world and without her identity as his wife, life could become unbearable. However she slowly discovers that infidelity has its own vicious consequences. Jesse Guevara is the eldest of five and the daughter of simple Santa Cruz Valley farmers. She is smart and beautiful and her teachers at St. Joseph’s Convent believe that she will be able to get a scholarship. Lisa is her best friend and although faced with the challenge of living with an alcoholic replacement for her father, never loses her joie de vivre. Jesse, Brian, Eddy and Lisa are all from different backgrounds and different socioeconomic status. However, when the lives of these four young people and their families collide through circumstance, their vulnerability is revealed and their secrets exposed. Each of them discovers that there is something they hold dear to their hearts. Something that once stolen can never be replaced.

Book Description
The setting is Zimbabwe. In a move instigated by Mugabe, the author, Richard Wiles, tells of the violence and terror which accompanied the seizures of farms owned by white farmers. He relates his own harrowing experiences when his farm is invaded by brutish thugs, who proceed to terrify his farm workers, disrupt his farming operations, and threaten him with death if he does not comply with their demands. Richard Wiles has established a woodland nature reserve on his property which the government has proclaimed a Protected Forest. As an avid environmentalist, it is his passionate love and concern. He is determined that the government should no rescind on the legal status which it has enshrined on the forest. Likewise, he will fight by every legal means to keep his home of 40 years, 33 of which he has shared with his wife, Beth, who lies in her grave in a quiet clearing of the wildlife sanctuary. The action begins in 2000. It was then that Mugabe recalled the guerillas who had helped him to power in 1980. He put them on the payroll and sent them onto farms to act as "political protesters". They were known throughout Zimbabwe as Warvets. It was a group of these Warvets who came onto the author's farm and set up their base in the farm village. From that moment they played havoc with ordered life. It was then too that Richard Wiles began writing a diary. This became the basis of the present book. Within the pages he tells of the diabolical nature of the Warvets and the maddening ambivalence of the police and ministerial officials. Unending stress and frustration will move him to dispair. Withal, when writing up his diary, his innate sense of humour will often break the surface.
