Come and See
Author: David Keller
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 0819226939
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Centering prayer, both a meditative technique and the experience of God’s presence in every waking moment, is a spiritual practice that all Christian continue to strive for. David Keller, close colleague of Thomas Keating and director of Keating’s Contemplative Ministry project, offers practical suggestions for personal prayer, addresses its difficulties, and reveals what is special about it in relation to other prayer traditions. Short but substantive, this book is for Christians looking for new insights about prayer and for people who are drawn to contemplation, but do not think the church has much to offer them. Above all, Keller emphasizes that it is the integration of personal prayer and our day-to-day activities that forms a life of prayer. Prayer is a life-long vocation, he reasons, not a separate compartment of life.

Spirituality That Makes a Difference
Author: Charles R. Kniker
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666717916
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Want to make your life more meaning-FULL? Most of us do. This book is a guide offering ways to do just that. Charles Kniker brings fifty-plus years of listening as a teacher, preacher, observer, and writer to a conversation with you. With questions and real-life stories and solutions, he'll support you; it won't be a one-way model. The many forms of spirituality will help explore life's big questions and ultimate mysteries. With tomorrow's climate changes, pandemics, political extremism, and battered moral boundaries, we need a transformational spirituality, a spirituality deeper than a few dusty rituals, more reliable than snappy slogans from a smart phone. This book is for young adults searching for answers to major questions; mid-life seekers, thankful for family, friends, and faith, but needing more; and seniors whose traditional communities seem irrelevant. Chapters in Part One are on home, self, voices of influence, and healthy spiritual communities. Chapters in Part Two offer a "YESS" to life, through various ways of joyous Yearning, truth-seeking Education, Soul care (for yourself and others), and Service to a world of neighbors. Kniker passionately believes human DNA wires us to be spiritual--transforming dreams to become deeds.

The Man Behind the Discourse
Author: Joann Follett Mortensen
Publisher: Greg Kofford Books
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 620
Book Description
Who was King Follett? When he was fatally injured digging a well in Nauvoo in March 1844, why did Joseph Smith use his death to deliver the monumental doctrinal sermon now known as the King Follett Discourse? Much has been written about the sermon, but little about King. Although King left no personal writings, Joann Follett Mortensen, King’s third great-granddaughter, draws on more than thirty years of research in civic and Church records and in the journals and letters of King’s peers to piece together King’s story from his birth in New Hampshire and moves westward where, in Ohio, he and his wife, Louisa, made the life-shifting decision to accept the new Mormon religion. From that point, this humble, hospitable, and hardworking family followed the Church into Missouri where their devotion to Joseph Smith was refined and burnished. King was the last Mormon prisoner in Missouri to be released from jail. According to family lore, King was one of the Prophet’s bodyguards. He was also a Danite, a Mason, and an officer in the Nauvoo Legion. After his death, Louisa and their children settled in Iowa where some associated with the Cutlerities and the RLDS Church; others moved on to California. One son joined the Mormon Battalion and helped found Mormon communities in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. While King would have died virtually unknown had his name not been attached to the discourse, his life story reflects the reality of all those whose faith became the foundation for a new religion. His biography is more than one man’s life story. It is the history of the early Restoration itself.
