Excerpt from The Common Spiders of the United States There are few books on the American spiders, and these are either large and expensive works or else special papers published by scientific societies, and so little known to the public. Since publishing my papers on the New England and Canadian spiders in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy from 1882 to 1894, I have had frequent calls for a smaller and simpler book to meet the wants of readers who, without making a special study of the subject, want to know a little about spiders in general and especially those species that they often meet with. It is hoped this book will answer the purpose and help to lessen the prejudice against spiders, and lead to a more general acquaintance with them, like the popular knowledge of birds and butterflies. The characters used in the descriptions are, as far as possible, those that can be seen without microscopic examination and without much experience in the handling of small animals. The illustrations, which show the form and markings of every species, are from my own drawings and photographs, a large part of them made new for this book. Excerpt from American Spiders Spiders Make Up A Considerable portion of the animal life of the vast and diversified land that is North America. That general knowledge of them is relatively meager must be attributed to the circumstance of size, rather than to inferiority in either importance or genuine interest. By means of size, and also of sound, birds, mammals, and vertebrate animals monopolize the stage and divert attention. Yet only a slight change in perspective will bring into view a microcosm of tiny creatures that, hidden away in leafy jungles or unseen in miniature forests under foot, live lives of unbelievable strangeness and complexity. To bring this microcosm into sharp focus for the general reader is the prime purpose of this book. Our American spider heritage is a large and diversified fauna commensurate in importance with the age and size of the continent itself. Proclaiming this heritage is a large and rewarding body of literature created by students during more than one hundred and fifty years of enthusiastic devotion. At the beginning one would mention the name of John Abbot, who, as early as 1776, began the study of spiders and other animals in the region around Savannah, Georgia. It is to be regretted that his fine paintings and accompanying notes were never published, as were those of the birds, butterflies, and moths for which he became justly famous. Excerpt from American Spiders and Their Spinningwork, Vol. 2: A Natural History of the Orbweaving Spiders of the United States, With Special Regard to Their Industry and Habits With the completion of the second volume of "American Spiders and their Spinningwork," I feel that have substantially ended the task which many years ago I proposed to myself. That task, as it lay in my purpose, was the description and illustration, in as large detail as possible, of the spinning industry and general habits of true spiders. Subsequently, as announced in the first volume of this work, my plan was so far modified as to make the spinningwork and habits of Orbweavers the principal theme, and to group around the same the industries of other spiders in such relations and proportions as seemed practicable. In the present volume I have adhered to this modified plan, but less closely than in the preceding one, having made large use of the natural history of other tribes than the Orbitelariae. It is probable that this volume will be more interesting than Volume I. both to the scientific and general public. It takes up the life history of spiders, and follows them literally from birth to death, from the cradle to the grave; more than that, it goes beyond the sphere of existing faunal life into the geologic periods, and touches upon the history and destiny of ancestral araneads who lived in the strange surroundings of prehistoric continents, the sites of which are embosomed in the rocks, or, like the amber forests, are now beneath the ocean. The courtship and mating of these solitary creatures; their maternal skill, devotion, and self sacrifice; their cocoon life and babyhood; their youth and old age; their means of communion with the world around them; their voyages through the air and dens in the ground; their allies and enemies; their fashion of death and its strange disguises these and other facts I have fried to bring before the reader in the following pages.
