The first paused as she reached the corner of Thirty-fourth street; the other girl also paused, a few feet distant. The street was crowded, as it usually is at that time of day, and several surface cars were passing rapidly in various directions. The snow of two days past made a deep, slushy mire, as slippery and dangerous to walk through as it was unpleasant to see. The young lady, who was not accustomed to walking, and had no sense of the danger of that particular crossing, suddenly tossed her little head and, with a slight laugh, plunged forward into the' chaos of moving vehicles and horses. The movement was so unexpected that a policeman, who had been coming to her assistance, stood still and gave utterance to a few vehement remarks explosive exclamations, apparently from every point of the com pass, were blown about through the air; all sorts of vehicles backed hurriedly and their wheels became interlocked. Several horses performed impromptu circus-feats of standing on their hind-legs, and all the drivers swore loudly, heartily and with much apparent relish. Out of this wild commotion the young lady presently emerged on the other side of the street, her arm closely held in the firm grasp of the poor girl, and both young women were now equally pale. N o doubt, this saved my life. In an hour it was almost as light as day. I untied my shoes, which I had fastened to the chest while swimming, put them on to guard my feet, and started in search of drinking-water. Fortunately it was close at hand. A little brook flowed down to the sea not more than forty rods to the north of my landing-place. Had I been in condition to remember anything, I should have known this fact, because while floating in the sea I noted this stream by the low foliage that marked its course near the beach, and longed for a draught of the water which I knew must be there. Stumbling along the sands, I reached the stream, and lying down, buried my face in the clear, sweet water, and drank until I could drink no more. This was possibly an imprudent thing to do. Indeed it was followed by dreadful nausea. But this did not hinder me from taking another draught, almost as deep as the first. Excerpt from Blackie's English School d104s George Anson was born in the year 1697, and used the sea from his boyhood. He saw service at the age of fifteen, and served under Sir John Norris in the Baltic and the North Sea. In 1724 he was in command of a frigate protecting commerce off the coast of North America; here and in the West Indies and Africa he served in the same capacity against the French for several years. In 1740 he commanded a squadron in the Pacific, and inflicted great loss on the Spaniards: at this time comes his famous voyage round the world, which ended in 1744, when he returned home with rich prizes. As Vice-Admiral of the Channel Fleet, he defeated the French off Cape Finisterre in 1747, when he was created Baron Anson. He was First Lord of the Admiralty for two periods of five years each, and died in 1762 as Admiral of the Fleet. This volume contains one of the best episodes of his voyage round the world, the long pursuit of the Spanish treasure ship ending in its capture.
