Book Description
Excerpt from The Southern Quarterly Review, Vol. 11 The same interest in the United States stimulated a policy more peaceful in its measures, but strictly analogous in its results. In the anxiety for industrial independence which succeeded the war of 1812, a tariff was adopted, which af forded adequate protection to American manufactures. This measure was an indirect encouragement 'to slave labor. This rendered necessary the extension of the culture of cotton over the Territory which we then possessed, and ren12 the north and south. Book Description
Excerpt from Southern Quarterly Review, Vol. 30 Speculation! It is a fertile and suggestive subject, calculated to attract at once the interest and attention of all. Our lot has been cast in those stirring times when speculation has become almost synonymous with business; when the whole duty of active life seems to be concentrated on the contrivance, realization, and reduplication of rapid profits; when the acquisition of large gains has become to every man almost a necessity, and the sole profession of nearly all, however varied the modes of its accomplishment may be; and when ingenuity, dexterity, and skilful combination, have superseded or outstripped industry in the great transactions of commerce. Speculation! It is the key-note of modem society; the open sesame of the chief mysteries of modem trade. It is at once the instrument and the explanation of that feverish avidity for sudden fortune which now rules the world, and of that deepening degradation of the multitude which throws such a sombre hue over the portrait of our present civilization. Book Description
Excerpt from The Quarterly Review, Vol. 83: Published in June and September, 1848 While the national sobriety and self-respect made them revolt from coarse revelries in the style of Teniers, the want of middling easy classes prevented any demand for the genteel comedy of Terburgs or domesticity of Gerard Dows. Where a people live out-of-doors, and furniture is a nuisance, to adorn their house is not a necessity and a delight, as in less favoured climates. Again, Spanish painters themselves, habituated to link art with high associations, looked down upon these performances as trivial and earthy. The exquisite finish and elaborate detail was also too much and too business-like for a semi-oriental people, who will not be fashed, ' and who have never reached mediocrity where nicety of handcraft is required. These causes, if they have limited Spanish art, at least have maintained its peculiar features; and thus, if condemned to dwell in decencies for ever, her great schools preserved as decorous, chaste, and natural character, free alike from the paganism of voluptuous Italy, the fantasies and devil-homage of freethinking Germany, the tinsel and lubricity of artificial France, and the coarse extra vagancies of Dutch dissent and democracy.
