Book Description
Founded in 1947, the Southern University Law Center (SULC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a model for student body and faculty diversity. While SULC was once required by law to be an all-black institution, the school's founders and subsequent leadership have created a legacy of providing access and opportunity to legal education that continues today. SULC graduates, beginning with the legendary civil rights attorney, political leader, and educator Jesse N. Stone Jr. and others in the school's first graduating class of 1950, have become trailblazers. The alumni have been successful in law, business, government, and other careers in Louisiana and places beyond. This book highlights their successes as well as the historical events that have shaped this institution. From student-led efforts to desegregate public accommodations to alumni leadership in achieving greater diversity in the Louisiana judiciary, SULC has and continues to produce lawyer-leaders who effect positive change.

Book Description
College football is a massive enterprise in the United States, and southern teams dominate poll rankings and sports headlines while generating billions in revenue for public schools and private companies. Southern football fans worship their teams, often rearranging their personal lives in order to accommodate season schedules. The Origins of Southern College Football sheds new light on the South’s obsession with football and explores the sport’s beginnings below the Mason-Dixon Line in the decades after the Civil War. Military defeat followed by a long period of cultural unrest compelled many southerners to look to northern ideas and customs for guidance in rebuilding their beleaguered society. Ivy League universities, considered bastions of enlightenment and symbols of the modernizing spirit of the age, provided a particular source of inspiration for southerners in the form of organized or “scientific” football that featured standardized rules and scoring. Transported to the South by men educated at northern universities, scientific football reinforced cultural values that had existed in the region for centuries, among them a tolerance for violence, respect for martial displays, and support for traditional gender roles. The game also held the promise of a “New South” that its supporters hoped would transform the region into an industrial powerhouse. Students and townspeople alike embraced the new sport, which served as a source of pride for a region that lagged woefully behind its northern counterpart in terms of social equity and economic prowess. The Origins of Southern College Football is an entertaining history of the South’s most popular sport cast against a broader narrative of the United States during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, two momentous periods of change that gave rise to the game we recognize today.

Book Description
"Florida Southern College is a signature point in the visioning of American education. Now, Frank Lloyd Wright's genius is documented, revealing how he translated nature's 'occult symmetry' into organic architecture reflecting democratic ideals. Wright belongs to the pantheon of similar utopian aspirants--Flagler, Fischer, Merrick, Nolan, Disney--who came to Florida to express visions of modern life."--Bruce Stephenson, author of Visions of Eden "Dale Gyure has crafted the first thoughtful examination of Frank Lloyd Wright's Child of the Sun campus. This book serves as a benchmark for future studies of Mr. Wright at Florida Southern College."--Randall M. MacDonald, coauthor of The Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College Florida Southern College in Lakeland boasts the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. With eleven buildings planned and designed by Wright, the campus forms a rich tableau for examining the architect's philosophy and design practice. In this fully illustrated volume, Dale Allen Gyure tells the engaging story of the ambitious project from beginning to end. The college's dynamic president, Ludd M. Spivey, wanted the grounds and buildings redesigned to embody a modern and distinctly American expression of Protestant theology. Informed by Spivey's vision, his own early educational experience, and his architectural philosophy, Wright conceived the "Child of the Sun" complex. Much like Thomas Jefferson's famous plan for the University of Virginia, the academic village that Wright designed for Florida Southern College expresses a dramatic and personal statement about education in a democratic society. Little studied to date, this significant campus and its history are finally given the attention they deserve in this fascinating volume.
