Book Description
In this vivid musical ethnography, Timothy Rice documents and interprets the history of folk music, song, and dance in Bulgaria over a seventy-year period of dramatic change. From 1920 to 1989, Bulgaria changed from a nearly medieval village society to a Stalinist planned industrial economy to a chaotic mix of capitalist and socialist markets and cultures. In the context of this history, Rice brings Bulgarian folk music to life by focusing on the biography of the Varimezov family, including the musician Kostadin and his wife Todora, a singer. Combining interviews with his own experiences of learning how to play, sing and dance Bulgarian folk music, Rice presents one of the most detailed accounts of traditional, aural learning processes in the ethnomusicological literature. Using a combination of traditionally dichotomous musicological and ethnographic approaches, Rice tells the story of how individual musicians learned their tradition, how they lived it during the pre-Communist era of family farming, how the tradition changed with industrialization brought under Communism, and finally, how it flourished and evolved in the recent, unstable political climate. This work—complete with a compact disc and numerous illustrations and musical examples—contributes not only to ethnomusicological theory and method, but also to our understanding of Slavic folklore, Eastern European anthropology, and cultural processes in Socialist states.

Book Description
What is not known about me is that I was greatly influenced by the understandings and philosophy of the magi who were the followers of the sacred fire. I had thoughts put into my mind while I slept and during times of deep silence about the sacredness of all life and about how to accept things in life without discarding any of it. I followed this and never gave up on finding God, for in rejecting any part of God, I was rejecting God entirely. Now in modern times, people must carefully examine what supported them before and make adjustments and corrections wherever necessary. I wanted to bring my writings in a newer form that would suit your present Earth reality because of the changing times and planetary shift. To do this, I chose my old student, Rae (he was one of the students at the seminary in Konya), to bring forth this new understanding to help people remember the Law of One and the Family of God. I offer these poems in humble gratitude. — Rumi

Book Description
A new 2023 translation into American English with introduction, translated from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1876 Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 2 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. Untimely Reflections is a collection of four essays written by Friedrich Nietzsche between 1873 and 1876. The essays are a critique of contemporary culture, society, and science, and Nietzsche argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed. In the first essay, "David Strauss: The Confessor and the Writer," Nietzsche criticizes the way in which Strauss uses historical facts to support his own personal beliefs, describing it as a "falsification of history." In the second essay, "On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life," Nietzsche argues that "history should be a means to an end" and that individuals should not be enslaved to the past. In the third essay, "Schopenhauer as Educator," Nietzsche praises the philosopher Schopenhauer's ideas and his emphasis on self-overcoming. The fourth essay, "Richard Wagner in Bayreuth," is a critique of the composer Richard Wagner and his approach to art and politics. Nietzsche writes, "Wagner's art is not the expression of a higher rank of man, but the symptom of a lower." Overall, "Untimely reflections" is a collection of essays in which Nietzsche critiques contemporary culture, society, and science, and argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed.
