Book Description
Three-dimensional perturbations on two-dimensional boundary layer flows are considered. First initially induced perturbations are studied and a general solution obtained. Second a specific externally induced perturbation is discussed. In both the streamwise velocity perturbation becomes infinite but the cross flow decays as downstream infinity is approached. This implies that the small cross flow approximation is a singular perturbation. The basis for this lies in the fact that the nature of the equations is changed by the approximation, viz., the zone of dependence property is lost.

Book Description
The study of three-dimensional boundary layers is synonymous with the study of cross flow or streamwise vorticity in the boundary layer. The research is concerned with the initial value problem for the 3-D boundary layer equations. Results are reported on exact solutions for the decay of streamwise vorticity, on a combined oil-flow--optical method of visualizing the surface flow field in the presence of 3D protuberances, and nonuniform behavior of the small crossflow approximation.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this report is to survey the available information mainly experimental, on the subject. Most attention is given to the complex flow field resulting when a 3-D protuberance is introduced into a laminar boundary layer; less can be said about the turbulent case or 2-D protuberances because enough detailed, careful experiments have not been made. There are some features of the induced flow fields common to all speed ranges; applications range from flow in the atmospheric boundary layer to hypersonic vehicle problems. Some attempts to analyze the downstream flow are also summarized.

Book Description
Recent adances in the theory of three-dimensional boundary layers are discussed in three main parts. The first part consists of general considerations. The boundary layer equations for laminar compressible flow, and the corresponding momentum integral equations, are written down, in an orthogonal curvilinear system of co-ordinates. Special forms for streamline and geodesic co-rdinates are also given. Cross-flows are then discussed, and this is followed by an account of an axially symmetric analogy and a compressibility correlation that hold when cross-flows are small. In the second part, the extensive exact solutions of Yohner and Hansen for the boundary layer having similar solutions or combinations of similar solutions, and of Sedney - for the boundary layer on a yawed spinning cone, are described. The third part concerns momentum integral methods in which streamline co-ordinates are employed. Works by Timman and Hall are described, and are contrasted as examples of extensions to three dimensions of the Pohlhausen and the Thwaites approaches respectively. The methods of Zaat and Cooke for(liminar) boundary layers with small cross-flow are then presented. (Author).

Book Description
Three-dimensional laminar boundary layers with suction or injection are examined by using an approximate method based on a small cross-flow assumption. The basic equations are derived in detail and the computational method is developed. The method is tested against exact solutions and is found to be reasonably accurate. Two examples with the same external condition, but with different surface conditions, are analyzed. In one case the distribution of the normal velocity at the surface satisfies the similarity requirement and in the other case the normal velocity is constant over the complete surface. Although the results of these two cases are different in detail, the general trend of both shows that the three-dimensional behaviour of the boundary layer diminishes with suction and amplifies with injection.
