The prevalence of singletons, or only children, in American families has significantly increased over the past several generations. This changing demographic structure of the family unit facilitates the need for research aimed at exploring the phenomenon of only children. Past research demonstrated specific emergent qualities of symmetrical relationships between parents and singletons resulting in more interpersonal contact, differing role allocation, and difficulties with the dethronement process. However, past research does not explore the broader aspect of the singletons' relational experiences. This qualitative study examined the phenomenon of being an only child by exploring their relationships with parents and peers. Data was collected from 10 adult-aged (over 18) singletons during semi-structured qualitative interviews using a phenomenological stance to identify three relational aspects: over-identification with adults versus age related peers, relationships with parents, and relationships with peers. Within these three general themes are sets of distinct central themes that contribute to the development of the overall broader relational patterns including: accelerated maturity, separation from parents, opportunities vs. spoiled, teasing, substitute siblings, sharing, leadership vs. shyness, and conflict. These results have clinical implications for future psychological work with singletons, including grief education and the singleton experience with group psychotherapy.
