Book Description
Excerpt from Voice Production and Analysis Thousands of persons whose voices naturally are pleasant, sweet, acceptable, find, as the result of train ing, of learning to sing, that their voices are ruined. The result of their efforts is ability to perform all sorts of vocal gymnastics. They have the trill and tremolo and arpeggio and many other accomplishments. Their singing, however, has no heart, no soul. The voice is merely the wreck of its former self, and the vocal organs are irreparably damaged. This result of the present methods of voice-culture is all the more remarkable when it is remembered that other physical training, if properly conducted, does not injure the bodily organs. Any one by gymnastics can be made a better athlete than he is naturally. A person who is taught to play the piano may not always develop into an artist. The muscular exercise required by such training does not, however, result in cramped fingers or in loss of sensation. Why, then, do the present meth ods of instruction in vocal music result so frequently in irretrievable injury to the voice and vocal organs To answer this question, not empirically, but scientifically, is the purpose of this series of articles. Book Description
Excerpt from Voice Fundamentals The principles advocated in the following pages are not the method of the Italians, the Germans or the French, nor of any other race of singers. The writer does not believe that the myriads of different vocal problems can be solved by any stereotyped method. Voice Training is a matter of Diagnosis and Treatment. However, there does exist a System of Fundamentals that is absolutely essential to correct singing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Ten Singing Lessons by Mathilde Marchesi is a gold mine of a book for any person trying to improve their singing voice or encourage others to do so, particularly those of the soprano range, as the author was. Even for the likes of the multitude of what we shall call 'vocally un-gifted' people, within which group this individual counts themself, Ms Marchesi's Ten Singing Lessons makes for a fascinating read. Born in Germany in the early 19th century Mathilde Marchesi's early life was spent in the pursuit of a singing career. Her voice proving only "adequate" this career, although achieved, was short lived and Mathilde moved on to become a tutor at the age of 28. In this endeavour she met far more success, so much so that in 1881, at the age of 60, she was able to open her own school on the vocal arts. Achieving fame largely for the training of such successful singers as Nellie Melba and Selma Kurz, Mathilde Marchesi was a much renowned and sought after singing tutor until she passed on in 1913. The contents of this book being fairly obvious, all we need say is that Mathidle Marchesi's advice is as valuable today as it was on its original publication. Book Description
Excerpt from The True Method of Tone Production: A New and Complete Course of Voice Training IN presenting this New Vocal Method to the musical public I am confident that what I ofier in this work is entirely original in subject and treatment. It is original in subject in that I demonstrate a very important feature of the vocal function in singing hitherto overlooked, and therefore totally neglected by the vocal teachers, as well as by the medical profession. It is original in treatment since I present the evidence of those unfamiliar vocal func tions in conjunction with a detailed de scription of the physical laws underlying their action in the production of vocal tone, by the aid of specially designed illustra tions, musical examples, and practical exercises. Book Description
Excerpt from The Training of Boys' Voices Nature should be our guide. A correct knowledge of the child-voice, its capabilities and limitations, would' enable singing teachers and Chorus conductors generally to prevent this wholesale injury and destruction. All children have some natural ability to use their voices aright, and the majority can be taught to sing well. The artistic possibilities of boys' voices have been known for centuries. Beautiful ringing tones could be heard from them everywhere if singing teachers were only able to train them in the right way. Mastery of this training is easily attainable by any painstaking teacher who has a good musical ear, a fair knowledge of music, and the necessary patience. The training of Children's voices, however, constitutes a department of voice culture for which some special preparation is required, and to assist in such preparation is the purpose of this little book.
