Book Description
Originally published in 1984. The history of sex in the last 100 years has usually been written as a story of progress from repression to sexual liberation. This book argues that the reverse is true, demonstrating that the ‘sexual revolution’ came as a backlash to a women’s movement which challenged men’s sexual abuse and tried to reconstruct male sexuality in women’s interest. At first it looks at those groups at the turn of the twentieth century who campaigned to challenge prevailing ideas about sexual behaviour. It moves on to review the work of the most influential sexologists Ellis, Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, and then presents a critical analysis of the sex magazine Forum.

Book Description
The notion of identification, especially in the discourse of feminist theory, has come sharply and dramatically into focus with the recent interest in such topics as queer performativity, cross-dressing, and racial passing. Identification Papers is the first book to track the evolution of identification's emergence in psychoanalytic theory. Diana Fuss seeks to understand where this notion of identification has come from, and why it has emerged as one of the most difficult problems in contemporary theory and politics. Identification Papers situates the recent critical interest in identification in the intellectual tradition that first gave the idea its theoretical relevance: psychoanalysis. Fuss begins from the assumption that identification has a history, and that the term carries with it a host of theoretical problems, conceptual difficulties, and ideological complications. By tracking the evolution of identification in Freud's work over a forty year period, Fuss demonstrates how the concept of identification is neither a theoretically neutral notion nor a politically innocent one. Identification Papers closely examines the three principal figures -- gravity, ingestion, and infection -- that psychoanalysis invokes to theorize identification. Fuss then deconstructs the psychoanalytic theory of identification in order to open up the possibility of more innovative rethinkings of the political. Drawing on literature, film, and Freud's own case histories, and engaging with a wide range of disciplines -- including critical theory, philosophy, film theory, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and feminism -- Identification Papers will be a necessary starting point in any future theoretical project that seeks to mobilize the concept of identification for a feminist politics.

Book Description
The papers featured in Attachment and Sexuality create a dense tapestry, each forming a separate narrative strand that elucidates different configurations of the relationship between attachment and sexuality. As a whole, the volume explores the areas of convergence and divergence, opposition, and integration between these two systems. It suggests that there is a bi-directional web of influences that weaves the attachment and sexual systems together in increasingly complex ways from infancy to adulthood. The volume’s unifying thread is the idea that the attachment system, and particularly the degree of felt security, or lack thereof in relation to early attachment figures, provides a paradigm of relatedness that forms a scaffold for the developmental unfolding of sexuality in all its manifestations. Such manifestations include infantile and adult, masturbatory and mutual, and normative and perverse. Also central to the papers is the idea that the development of secure attachment is predicated, in part, on the development of the capacity for mentalization, or the ability to envision and interpret the behavior of oneself and others in terms of intentional mental states, including desires, feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Topics discussed in the book will help to shape the direction and tenor of further dialogues in the arena of attachment and sexuality.

Now in a new edition, Speaking of Sexuality: Interdisciplinary Readings remains the most comprehensive, research-oriented, and interdisciplinary sexuality anthology available. Edited by a team of highly acclaimed professionals, this edition retains the same framework as its predecessors: sexual health. Its guiding principle is that a healthy sexual script should be a realistic goal for everyone, because sexuality is an inseparable part of an individual's persona from birth until death. Speaking of Sexuality, Third Edition, presents leading classic and contemporary works in sexuality research and theory along with in-depth articles about timely issues from the popular media. The book chapters and journal articles, which have been carefully edited to make them accessible yet still rigorous, are enhanced by detailed part openers and chapter lead-ins that provoke critical thinking and class discussions. Incorporating the insights of a new coeditor, psychologist Terri D. Fisher, the third edition offers twenty-eight new book chapters and journal articles and two additional units--"Relationships and Sexuality" and "Sexual Health." This edition also integrates more selections on race/ethnicity and sexual orientation and additional readings from psychological, anthropological, and feminist perspectives. It covers a host of cutting-edge topics including asexuality, bisexuality, evolutionary psychology, "hooking up," the medicalization of erectile dysfunction, oral sex, and virginity pledges. Ideal for sexuality courses offered in psychology, sociology, family studies, health education, nursing, women's studies, and social work departments, Speaking of Sexuality, Third Edition, aids students in their quest to better understand their own sexuality and to become more savvy consumers of sexuality-related materials in the mass media.
