The Second Generation DMUs
Author: Colin Marsden
Publisher: Ian Allan Pub
ISBN: 9780860936244
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
The story of the Manchester trolleybus network is unusual. The city's Transport Department did not want trolleybuses and strenuously resisted their introduction but when forced to do so, gave the city a system of the highest quality. Joint operator Ashton-under-Lyne often found itself swept along in Manchester's wake. In complete contrast, the other transport undertaking involved, the Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Transport and Electricity Board wanted to operate trolleybuses but never managed to do so. The war caused major changes to Manchester's plans, bringing trolleybuses to places that not even their most enthusiastic supporters had envisaged. The vehicle fleet, too, was unusual. The City Council's policy of supporting local industry caused the Transport Department to buy most of its buses from Gorton-based Crossley Motors which employed many local people, as did its much larger parent company, Crossley Brothers Ltd. Ashton followed suit but no other trolleybus operator had a large fleet of Crossleys. The fascinating story is told by respected authors Chris Heaps and Michael Eyre. Illustrated with a wealth of colour and black and white photographs, route maps and comprehensive fleet and service details, it is an enjoyable read which will bring back many memories not only of the trolleybuses but also of the city's streets and suburbs.

The West Highland Lines
Author: Gordon D. Webster
Publisher: The History Press
ISBN: 075095700X
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
The railway lines of the West Highlands of Scotland are famous the world over for their illustrious history and unparalleled scenic beauty. Linking Glasgow with Oban, Fort William and Mallaig, the lines managed to survive the axe of Dr Beeching, whose infamous report forced the closure of almost a third of Britain's railways in the 1960s. With a detailed look at the routes, their workings and rolling stock since then, Webster examines how the West Highland network has gone on to prosper to the present day. Despite Beeching, British Rail's rationalisation, privatisation, fluctuating freight traffic levels and economic downturn, the network retained its unique infrastructure in the modern age. Today the use of modern traction, together with the return of steam-hauled trains, has added yet another dimension to this wonderful scenic route.

Environmental Assessment on Energy and Sustainability by Data Envelopment Analysis
Author: Toshiyuki Sueyoshi
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 111897929X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 820
Book Description
Introduces a bold, new model for energy industry pollution prevention and sustainable growth Balancing industrial pollution prevention with economic growth is one of the knottiest problems faced by industry today. This book introduces a novel approach to using data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a powerful tool for achieving that balance in the energy industries—the world’s largest producers of greenhouse gases. It describes a rigorous framework that integrates elements of the social sciences, corporate strategy, regional economics, energy economics, and environmental policy, and delivers a methodology and a set of strategies for promoting green innovation while solving key managerial challenges to greenhouse gas reduction and business growth. In writing this book the authors have drawn upon their pioneering work and considerable experience in the field to develop an unconventional, holistic approach to using DEA to assess key aspects of sustainability development. The book is divided into two sections, the first of which lays out a conventional framework of DEA as the basis for new research directions. In the second section, the authors delve into conceptual and methodological extensions of conventional DEA for solving problems of environmental assessment in all contemporary energy industry sectors. Introduces a powerful new approach to using DEA to achieve pollution prevention, sustainability, and business growth Covers the fundamentals of DEA, including theory, statistical models, and practical issues of conventional applications of DEA Explores new statistical modeling strategies and explores their economic and business implications Examines applications of DEA to environmental analysis across the complete range of energy industries, including coal, petroleum, shale gas, nuclear energy, renewables, and more Summarizes important studies and nearly 800 peer reviewed articles on energy, the environment, and sustainability Environmental Assessment on Energy and Sustainability by Data Envelopment Analysis is must-reading for researchers, academics, graduate students, and practitioners in the energy industries, as well as government officials and policymakers tasked with regulating the environmental impacts of industrial pollution.
