Aretino's Satyr
Author: Raymond B. Waddington
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 9780802088147
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
Pietro Aretino's literary influence was felt throughout most of Europe during the sixteenth-century, yet English-language criticism of this writer's work and persona has hitherto been sparse. Raymond B. Waddington's study redresses this oversight, drawing together literary and visual arts criticism in its examination of Aretino's carefully cultivated scandalous persona - a persona created through his writings, his behaviour and through a wide variety of visual arts and crafts. In the Renaissance, it was believed that satire originated from satyrs. The satirist Aretino promoted himself as a satyr, the natural being whose sexuality guarantees its truthfulness. Waddington shows how Aretino's own construction of his public identity came to eclipse the value of his writings, causing him to be denigrated as a pornographer and blackmailer. Arguing that Aretino's deployment of an artistic network for self-promotional ends was so successful that for a period his face was possibly the most famous in Western Europe, Waddington also defends Aretino, describing his involvement in the larger sphere of the production and promotion of the visual arts of the period. Aretino's Satyr is richly illustrated with examples of the visual media used by the writer to create his persona. These include portraits by major artists, and arti minori: engravings, portrait medals and woodcuts.

Hellenistic Pottery and Terracottas
Author: Homer A. Thompson
Publisher: ASCSA
ISBN: 9780876619445
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 564
Book Description
The articles collected and reprinted here appeared originally in the pages of Hesperia. "Two Centuries of Hellenistic Pottery," by Homer A. Thompson, presented in 1934 some of the pottery found in the early excavations of the American School in the Athenian Agora. The series titled "Three Centuries of Hellenistic Terracottas," by Dorothy B. Thompson, includes ten articles that were published between 1952 and 1966. The working chronology that the authors established has made these studies basic references for investigations of Attic pottery and terracottas of the Hellenistic period, wherever found. In recognition of subsequent discoveries, the Thompsons' work has now been augmented by a preface with bibliography for each, prepared by Susan I. Rotroff, which comments particularly on the changes in chronology resulting from the continuing excavations in the Agora and elsewhere. In "Afterthoughts" Dorothy Thompson has made new observations concerning certain terracottas.

ISBN: 1611606632
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 428
Book Description
In the world of Kartha, the Achaean peninsula is the only place where the gods still hold sway. The Olympians, unhappy with their diminished position, hatch a plan to spread their influence. Caught in the middle is a young Spartan princess named Helen who becomes an excuse to begin a full scale war. What the Olympians don’t know is that a group of extraordinary immortals including Heracles and Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi, is gathering to oppose them. Led by Kyra, the Immortal Warrior, the group heads toward Troy to try to stop the war. Along the way, they encounter dangers at every turn as well as legends both friend and foe. It is only when they finally arrive at Troy that they discover restoring peace may take much more than they imagined. It may even mean having to defeat the wayward gods themselves.

An Introduction
Author: Giulio Colesanti
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110390205
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
This volume deals with the submerged literature of ancient Greece; that is, all the texts produced for socially relevant events that have contributed to the configuration and articulation of ancient Greek culture as we know it. In particular, the hermeneutic tool of submerged literature may shed new light on the dynamics behind the 'emersion' or 'submersion' of certain texts during different periods. The category of submerged literature is extended here to include preserved and lost texts as well as those texts that can be reconstructed through investigation. The volume investigates the manifold speech acts that we know of through various sources and that, either from the outset or over the course of time, have been placed at the edge of diffusion, conservation and transmission. The essays contained in the volume deal with questions of hermeneutics, philology and methodology, as well as with epic cycles, lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, satyr drama, and mime. By approaching these genres from the perspective of submerged literature, the book tries to provide a more precise contextualization of the texts within the communication system of ancient Greece. The book thus presents a new line of research and a series of studies that take a fresh look at the texts and all archaeological and iconographic sources relating to Greek culture, taking into account the results of ethnographic and anthropological research. This extensive investigation examines unique ancient Greek orality and literacy dynamics using a new hermeneutic frame that will hopefully reshape our understanding of ancient Greek culture.
