Book Description
In the wake of recent papal legislation, the various liturgies of the Roman Rite may today be celebrated in either their post-Tridentine or post-Vatican II forms. Whilst much discussion of this new situation focuses on purely liturgical issues, this book breaks new ground by arguing that the coexistence of the two forms raises questions of a profoundly ecclesiological character. Peter McGrail explores the relationship between ritual form, ecclesial self- understanding and constructs of the world that are at play as adults become members of the Church. Analysing the rites by which adults were taken into the Church for three and a half centuries, this book goes on to explore attempts to find a new ritual expression for the journey to Christian Initiation, set against the divergent and even conflicting ecclesiologies which were at play before and during the Council.

Book Description
Eucharist: Our sacrament of unity--that we never stop discussing and debating. Nor should we! Nathan Mitchells earlier book Cult and Controversy demonstrated the breadth of his scholarship on the history of Eucharistic practice and piety in the Church. In this expanded edition of Real Presence, Dr. Mitchell brings that scholarship to bear on the contemporary dialogue about the Eucharist. What he says is vital to Sunday practice and parish life. Teachers, preachers, catechists, and students especially will find help in Mitchells insights into the Catechism of the Catholic Church and its teachings on the Eucharist; into the ways that contemporary biblical scholarship opens up our understanding of Jesus and the Eucharist; into those two wonderful words that have again and again challenged the Church to go ever deeper--real presence; and into the theologies of the Eucharist coming from contemporary Europeans such as Jean-Luc Marion, Herbert McCabe, and Catherine Pickstock. This new and expanded edition also includes Nathan Mitchells essay 'Eucharist in the Work of Some Contemporary European Theologians' and an expanded commentary on Eucharist in Luke's Gospel.Nathan Mitchell holds a doctorate in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame and is associate director for research at the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy. Book Description
The long-standing tradition of baptizing infants suggests that the sacraments plunge our bodies into salvation, so the revelation of God's love in the sacraments addresses the whole person, not the mind alone. In this work, the contemporary Roman Catholic rite of baptism for infants becomes a case study, manifesting the connections between the human body, the ecclesial body, and the Body of Christ. The sacramental life, for children as for adults, is an ongoing journey deeper into the life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. By examining the church's practice of infant baptism, Kimberly Hope Belcher asks how human beings participate in God's life through the sacraments. Christian sacraments are embodied, cultural rituals performed by and for human beings. At the same time, the sacraments are God's gifts of grace, by which human beings enter into God's own life. In this study, contemporary ritual studies, sacramental theology, and trinitarian theology are used to explore how participation in the sacraments can be an efficacious engagement in God's life of love. Kimberly Hope Belcher is an assistant professor of theology at Saint John's University, where she teaches sacramental theology and ritual studies. She is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy and writes for the liturgical blog Pray Tell.
