Book Description
Excerpt from Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, 1872-1873: Volumes 13 and 14 Since writing the above, I have seen several articles in various medical journals, of which I particularly remember one by Dr. T. C. Osborn, of Greens borough, Ala, published in the New Orleans Medical J ournal, October 1870, advocating precisely my doctrine, and I feel proud to be sustained by such distinguished authority. I have also seen N iemeyer's work on Practice, edi tion 1869, advocating substantially the same views, and, by the way, in his preface to that edition apologizing for not having issued a new edition for seven years, he says that nothing has been lost to mankind, for within that period, towit, the period from 1862 to 1869, more improvement has been made in the treatment of grave diseases, amongst which he enumerates pneu monia, than for fifty years before. (i quote from memory, but substantially). By reference to his treatment of pneumonia, it will be seen that it closely ap proximates mine. Book Description
Excerpt from The Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, 1873, Vol. 16 At 12 o'clock M. No change having occurred in the charac ter Of the pains, nor in the position Of the foetal head, at my request Dr. Quimby, of Jersey City, who happened to be on a visit in the village, visited the patient with me, and to his effi cient assistance in the further management of the case I am greatly indebted. The patient had now been in hard labor for fifteen hours, and began to show evidence Of fatigue. The foetal head could be rather more easily reached; a fact due, in a great measure, to increased tumefaction Of its scalp. But the vertex was still high above the upper strait, without any tendency to engage in the pelvic canal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, 1876, Vol. 22 It may be stated, on the authority of Jaennel and other oh servers, 'that registration uniformily diminishes the number of clandestine prostitutes. Many who abandon their ranks report, some of them voluntarily, for enrollment, whilst others, through fear of the police, forsake a life of shame. These women are a part, but a very small part, of the out-lying stragglers of this great camp of iniquity. It is the amelioration of the condition of the main body with which we must first be concerned, and when these come to learn their real status, that they have not ceased to be the objects of the care of enlightened government; and more than all, that they can not be permitted to scatter wide the seeds of disease and death unhindered, the others will be still further restricted in their immoral acts, or surren der at discretion to a' judicious supervision. Book Description
Excerpt from The Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, 1879, Vol. 27 The books generally teach that convalescence from yellow fever is rapid and complete; such, however, has not been the case this year. Relapses have been common and fatal, and convalescence tedious and beset with danger. Many cases have assumed the form and appearance of typho-malarial fever, and glandular swellings and abscesses have occurred. Book Description
Excerpt from The Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, 1876, Vol. 19 The old Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, the oldest journal in America, has recently changed hands, and will be published by its editors. This excellent weekly is edited by a corps of talented and accomplished physicians (dis. J. C. War ren, Thomas Dwight, and Frank W. Draper), and is one of the best journals on either the foreign or domestic exchange list. Its original pages are almost always valuable, and the tone of the work is elevated, dignified, and admirable. Its course 18 always independent, and it has accomplished great good in the reformation of many abuses. The reading of a specimen copy is earnestly advised. The New York Medical Journal, edited by Dr. James B. Hunter, is one of the sterling periodicals of this country. The present editor has greatly improved the work, and evinces a marked aptitude for the responsible duties so well discharged. The contents of this journal are always interesting and instruo tive; its original matter is often classic in value, and the se lected articles are excellent exponents of the progress and truth of medical science.
