Book Description
I placed a whisky and soda before the Rev. J. D. Eltham, also sliding the tobacco jar nearer to his hand. The refined and sensitive face of the clergy-man offered no indication of the truculent character of the man. His scanty fair hair, already gray over the temples, was silken and soft-looking; in appearance he was indeed a typical English churchman; but in China he had been known as “the fighting missionary,” and had fully deserved the title. In fact, this peaceful-looking gentleman had directly brought about the Boxer Risings

The Devil Doctor
Author: Sax Rohme
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781983567438
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Author Sax Rohmer (Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward) published The Devil Doctor in1916. The work was actually completed earlier under the name Adventures in the Career of the Mysterious Dr. Fu-Manchu, which was never published. Although the book was preceded by a volume of short stories, this was Sax Rohmer's first full novel in the Fu Manchu series. This book is sometimes published under the title "The Return of Fu Manchu." What does Rohmer tell us to describe Dr. Fu Manchu? "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, ... one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present ... Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man." Be warned that these books are quite racist, so if you will be offended by antisemitism and defense of Hitler, this book is not for you. If you are willing to look past that, you are in for a ride of adventure, mystical artifacts and bizarre murders. There will be eastern drugs and beautiful women, as well as feats of intelligence and honor. This book is definitely worth the read as part of the overall Fu Manchu series.
