Book Description
The tile is a translation of selected Armenian poems and legends. Included in those are a number of episodes from the chronicles of Moses of Khorene, a fifth century Armenian historian, which recount legendary incidents of ancient Armenian history. The book concludes with a long essay by Aram Raffi, which contextualizes the long history of Armenian literature. The essay also details the long religious history of Armenia, starting with an extended discussion of the ancient Pagan deities. Armenia is in a region which is a cross-road between Asia and Europe, and has more often than not been conquered by the dominant regional power of the day, starting with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, through the Ottomans and finally the Russians. Nevertheless, Armenia has managed to hold onto a unique cultural and linguistic identity. Armenians have produced a substantial literature. Unfortunately, not much of this has been translated into English. This anthology is one of the few Translations of Armenian literature, pertaining to legends and poems of Armenia, especially that of the pagan era.

Book Description
"The Women, Too, Were Blessed by David Zakarian is the first extensive study of the representation of women in the fifth-century Armenian literature and historiography. It investigates the ways in which the ecclesiastical authorities envisioned the role of women in society after Christianisation and reveals some aspects of women's lived experience in the patriarchal society of Armenia. The book offers a close scrutiny of all the passages that speak about women examining them within the context of pre-Christian (Zoroastrian) beliefs of the Armenians and the works of Greek and Syriac Church Fathers. The texts invariably evince the authors' tendency to construct and promote role models of influential, pious Christian women who contributed to the preservation and promulgation of the new religion"--

Book Description
The contributions in this collection underline the vibrancy as well as complexity that characterizes the study of American literature and culture in the twenty-first century with regard to the exploration and understanding of ethnicity and gender. The book aims at contributing to the research already taking place within American Studies, while opening up the texts discussed to further literary and cultural evaluations and interpretations. America is viewed here not in isolation but as part of a fluctuating as well as geographically and culturally expansive reality as testified by the Asian, European, and American background of the volume contributors.

Combining features of a reference work, bibliographic guide, and literary history, it records the output of almost 400 authors who wrote both in Armenia and in the communities of the Armenian diaspora. Presents a general history of the literature, with chapters devoted to a single century and prefaced by information on the era's social, cultural, and religious milieus; followed by a section of biobibliographical entries for Armenian authors, a section of bibliographies and reference works, and a listing of anthologies of literature both in Armenian and in translation. Includes references to earlier authors and to sources of influence, both Armenian and non-Armenian. A final section contains bibliographies devoted to particular genres and periods, such as minstrels, folklore, and prosody. A thematic discussion of the works of more than 150 poets, historians, monks, and others highlights the themes that captured the imagination of Armenian authors.--From publisher description.

Book Description
Pilibosian's book interlaces the Armenian-American experience with the voices of those in Armenia or the Middle East. These poems are written in a narrative style with a refreshing respect for language as it describes rhyme, addresses contemporary issues peculiar to Armenians, shows a respect for roots. Some of her characters are real and some convenient creations for poetic dialogue. She can be very first person personal: 'I spilled my American hopes of many afternoons on the pavements that wore my life. An Armenian daughter doesn't forget the name that gets her born, the long curls that were shorn.' She can be a resource for history: 'Oral history is a vagrant as a goat ... Orphans were necessary for survival. America and Europe were the pills ... Remembrance is the epitaph/for ghosts of humble glory.' She pays homage to some of the great Armenian artists as in 'Letter to Khachaturian on his 100th Birthday, 2003, to painter Arshile Gorky, Mihran Manoukian, Aivazovsky and others. € She is most effective in her longer poem 'Letter to Nazeli', an exchange of thoughts and feelings between one who stayed in the homeland and one whose physical presence is in America.
