Book Description
Excerpt from The Renascence of Faith It is an honor to introduce my friend Richard Roberts, of Crouch Hill Presbyterian Church, London, to the American reading public, and to be allowed to recall some facts which show that he has a right to be heard. In England he is fast making for himself an indelible name as an energetic leader in the interests of the Kingdom of God. Born some forty odd years ago in Wales, and dedicated to the holy ministry, Mr. Roberts early won his spurs in a memorable forward movement of the Welsh Churches. Drawn into the vortex of London while yet little more than a stripling, he took his place from the first as an exponent of public questions, gaining the startled admiration of the Prime Minister of England by a deliverance upon the subject of Education characterized by Mr. Asquith as one of the most statesmanlike utterances he had ever heard. Carrying the heavy burden of a great metro politan pastorate, Mr. Roberts has found time for a varied leadership in political and ecclesiastical life; he is an acknowledged expert in Sunday School reform, and has been elected President of the Metropolitan Council of Evangelical Free Churches. If then Mr. Roberts passes in review the various aspects of the Holy War, he does so not as spectator only; he is combatant as well. The passion of the battle is in the report he makes. He has listened and watched while he has been fighting. Living right in the centre of the most turbulent current of thought and life, he has been alert to every sound ominous and hopeful; he has observed fearlessly and impartially and he speaks with decision and authority. He knows the dangers of the survey he has made. It is the easiest task in the world, he says, to formulate an indictment of one's own time: it is also one of the most perilous. Mr. Roberts would be the last to affirm that he has wholly escaped the perils that are incidental to widely sweeping critical review. But whoever reads this book carefully will find himself in possession of an instructive estimate of the forces making for and against righteousness in our time. Book Description
Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Description
Excerpt from The Return to Faith: And Other Addresses The addresses which form this little volume were prepared for various occasions, separated by considerable intervals of time. They have no mutual dependence or natural consecutive order. They have, nevertheless, a certain unity, in that from various sides they touch the great problem, whether, and by what adjustments, we may, in this age of science and critical investigation, hold fast the noble heritage of Christian faith which has come down to us from an age whose intellectual environment was so different from our own. That theme has been before me continually from the days of early manhood, and to it what I venture to regard as the best work of my life has been devoted. A book wherein are reproduced utterances of various times and occasions, whatever other faults it may have, is sure to be marked by two defects. Book Description
What is a “Catholic” novel? This book analyzes the fiction of Graham Greene in a radically new manner, considering in depth its form and content, which rest on the oppositions between secularism and religion. Sampson challenges these distinctions, arguing that Greene has a dramatic contribution to add to their methodological premises. Chapters on Greene’s four “Catholic” novels and two of his “post-Catholic” novels are complemented by fresh insight into the critical importance of his nonfiction. The study paints an image of an inviting yet beguilingly complex literary figure.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Returning Tide of Faith Such was the verdict of the Victorian poet. But the ebb-tide of faith has turned. The Christian Faith is coming again. Such - despite the many disappointments and perplexities of to-day-is my conviction. I long to share it with such men as I learned to love and admire in the war. To them I commend these pages in all their crudity. I pray that they may help many to the truth, and that the truth may make them free. Book Description
Excerpt from The Increase of Faith The following work treats of the infancy, growth, and maturity of Christian Faith. The doctrine on which it is founded, namely, that faith in Christ (like the Chris tian life upon the whole) admits of gradual progress from less to more perfect develop ment - may almost be said to be unknown to the science of Theology. If, however, this doctrine is not found in a definite and systematic form in the ordinary systems of doctrinal Christianity, it appears to be uni formly recognised by every writer of any authority, as one which enters essentially into the teaching of Holy Scripture.
