It was perhaps in consequence of these retired habits that his ex traordinary talents and attainments were not fully appreciated till he came to St. John's college, Cambridge, in the year 1801. There the few se lect friends, with whom he associated, had reason to be astonished at the stores of knowledge, which he had accumulated during those years, which are usually devoted to amusement or at best to lighter studies, and in that pleasant and most intimate intercourse which prevails among young men of congenial habits at the University they were sometimes delighted by the playfulness of his hu mour, and at other times astonished by the accu racy and retentiveness of his memory. Here, however, as at Harrow, the same reserved habits prevented his talents and attainments from be coming generally known, and the little inclination he ever evinced for mathematical pursuits pre cluded the chance of his becoming distinguished by his success in the peculiar studies of that Uni versity. Probably he may have thought that, cir cumstanced as he was, the knowledge of History, 'the study of the best classical writers, both ancient and modern, and the attainment of considerable facility in speaking and writing a variety of lan guages, were likely to be both more agreeable and more profitable to him than a progress in those abstruse sciences, by which the University of Camflung.
