This study examined the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, and preference for an ethnically similar counselor in undergraduate students in a medium sized university in the midwest. Eighty-seven students who identified as White and 27 students who identified as an ethnic minority were given the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (Helms & Carter, 1993) or the People of Color Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale - Short Version (Fish & Farina, 1995), and four questions assessing counselor preference. Results indicated that White students who scored highest in the Reintegration status had less favorable attitudes toward counseling. In addition, White students scoring highest in the Immersion status had more favorable attitudes toward counseling.

This study examined cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as influences on the attitudes of African American males toward psychotherapy. The sample consisted of 101 African American male undergraduate and graduate students. Participants completed the Cultural Mistrust Inventory (CMI), Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (RIAS-B), Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) Gender Role Conflict Scale (GCRS) and Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPH). Pearson r correlations indicated a significant relationship between racial identity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.314), but no significant correlation between cultural mistrust and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.184), nor between masculinity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.045, .010, -.225). A regression analysis, with cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as predictor variables and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help as the criterion, indicated no significant predictors (R=.135, R2=.060). Limitations of this study, as well as implications and recommendations for future research and practice, are discussed.

The results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that participants with higher scores on the Cultural Mistrust Inventory, lower scores on the Preencounter Assimilation subscale, and higher scores on the Internalization Afrocentricity subscale showed a greater preference for a Black counselor. Black participants might have preferred a Black counselor due to their strong feelings of mistrust of Whites, attitudes that reject assimilation into the dominant, White culture and attitudes that emphasized positive connections to Black people and African culture. A finding that may have significantly influenced Black participants' preference for a Black counselor was the significant relationship found between scores on the Cultural Mistrust Inventory and the Immersion - Emersion Anti-White subscale. Strong feelings of mistrust of Whites were significantly related to strong feelings of hatred and disdain for White people.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward utilizing counseling services, and religious commitment (the independent variables) as predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure (the dependent variables) among Black adults ages 25 to 50. Data were collected from 100 participants with women comprising 75% of the sample. Results showed that pre-encounter and religious commitment were negatively associated with intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure. Second, internalization and attitudes were predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure in counseling. These results make an important contribution to research with an emphasis on psychological help-seeking behavior within the Black community. When designing interventions for the Black population, the demographic variables, previous experience, overall satisfaction with professional providers, attitudes toward seeking professional counseling help, and an individual's level of religious commitment should be carefully evaluated. Further, a collaboration between religious organizations within the Black community and professional counseling centers can assist with referrals potentially increasing utilization rates.

This book examines the major theories of Black and White racial identity. Moreover, theoretical perspectives that were originally developed to describe social fomentation have been updated and expanded to explain the role of racial identity in counseling dyads, social relationships, and groups. Measures for assessing racial identity are described. Original research addresses the relationship of racial identity to other personality characteristics such as value orientations, decision-making styles and counseling process variables such as satisfaction, counselor strategies, and client reactions. Part 1 presents basic racial identity theory and measurement issues as they pertain to individuals and intergroup functioning.
