Most of the essays collected in this volume deal with theoretical issues that dominate the international debate on Postmodernism, issues such as the shifting nature of the concept, the problem of periodization and the problem of historicity. Other essays offer readings of Postmodernist texts and relate practical criticism to a theoretical framework. Hans Bertens (Utrecht) sketches the historical development of the concept Postmodernism in American criticism, distinguishing between the various definitions that have been proposed over the last twenty-five years, in an attempt to bring some order to the field and to facilitate future discussion. Brian McHale (Tel Aviv) and Douwe Fokkema (Utrecht) offer models for the description of Postmodernist texts. Richard Todd (Amsterdam) argues convincingly that Postmodernism is much more of a presence in contemporary British fiction than has so far been assumed, and Herta Schmid (Munich) presents a similar argument with respect to Russian avant-garde theater. Elrud Ibsch (Amsterdam) presents a contrastive analysis of Thomas Bernhard and Robert Musil; Ulla Musarra (Nijmegen) writes on Italo Calvino. The relation between Existentialism and Postmodernism is examined by Gerhard Hoffman (Wurzburg); Theo D'haen (Utrecht) finds important parallels between Postmodernism in literature and in the visual arts; Matei Calinescu (Bloomington, Ind.) relates literary Postmodernism to a far more general cultural shift, rejecting, however, Foucault's notion of an epistemic break and arguing for both continuity and discontinuity. Finally, Helmut Lethen (Utrecht) and Susan Suleiman (Harvard) sharply question the concept of Postmodernism. Suleiman argues that the supposed Postmodernist reaction against Modernism may well be a critical myth or, if it isn't, a reaction limited to the American literary situation.

This book focuses on the autobiographical poetry of early twentieth century author Antonia Pozzi and her lifelong friend and fellow poet, Vittorio Sereni. Antonia Pozzi, an author whose popularity in Italy has increased dramatically in the past few years, was a young girl during the First World War. She was born into a wealthy and influential family, and, after the rise of Fascism, her father was a prominent state official. In 1938 Pozzi committed suicide at the age of twenty-six. Her major collection of poems, Parole, was published posthumously. Pozzi’s best friend, "brother" and most devoted confidant, Vittorio Sereni, is a more recognizable figure in Italian literary history. Born in 1913, a year after Pozzi, he served in the Italian Army during World War II, and was held in an allied prison camp in Algeria during the last years of the war. While Sereni is by far the better-known author, his response to the war experience and, particularly, to imprisonment recalls Pozzi’s work on a number of levels. In the “diaries” of both authors, autobiography functions as a means of constantly reasserting the self as a unique and separate individual against the totalizing forces of Fascist propaganda.

The book is divided into three partsThe Mind in Every Day Living, The Mind and the Dream World, and The Mind after Death. Due to the immateriality of mind or consciousness and the unknown mechanism thereof, the terms such as consciousness, mind, thought, emotion, and the like are not clearly defined, even in the twenty-first century, Choi Writes. To discover the mechanism and to define the terms clearly are my concerns in this book. He adds that one of his objectives is to prove continuity of consciousness after death. The first five consciousnesses are our sense consciousnesses, Choi explains, while the sixth consciousness, called the mano-vijnana, is generated by the sixth organ, referred to as the organ of mind or root of mind. What exactly that is, Choi continues, we do not know. However, it is crystal clear that the sixth organ is not the brain. It must be a nonphysical and immaterialistic organ that is capable of reading something. Choi goes on to explain the seventh consciousness, called manas. Unlike the first six consciousnesses, this one does not have an organ. It involves thinking, cogitation, and intellection. The first six consciousnesses perceive and discriminate their corresponding objects and trigger to think so as to give rise to the seventh consciousness, manas, which is accumulated in the eighth consciousness, alaya, as seeds of mind (cittas), Choi continues, adding that all mental activities are stored in alaya.
