A Spiritual Uplifting
Author: Dorris Owney Jackson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781665516938
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 82
Book Description
A SPIRITUAL UPLIFTING is a collection of experiences, encouragement and inspiration that helped me to be who I am today. A true believer and woman of God. To show others that everyday is not sunshine but that God delivers us through it all. One thing I realized in my belief that God answers all prayers. Sometimes it's YES what we all want to hear. Sometimes it's NO to protect us from forces we can't see. Sometimes it's WAIT you can't handle it right now. My poems are intended to uplift, elevate and console the mind. To remind those reading them there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Trouble comes to make us stronger. We were never promised there wouldn't be trials and tribulations. But, we were promised that we are not alone or forsaken. Our heavenly father always has a ram in the bush. In these contents there is something encouraging and inspiring for everyone. Even those whose lives have been sweeter (easier) than others. Prayerfully you will uplift someone else. Within are my truths, some of my life experiences. Along with the assurance that life is an awesome gift. No matter what one might face. There have been good people and good times in my life. There have been some not so good people and times. We can one day look back on the good and tough times smile and be thankful for the experiences that helped us realize our purpose in life. I inspire you yo stay positive to pray your way through. Laugh when you feel like crying. To put your trust and faith in God not in man. Know that God has all power in his hands. "I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future". Jeremiah 29:11 So relax, enjoy and allow your soul to be soothed. Life is worth the living.

For the Souls of Black Folks
Author: Cari Jackson
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1620323001
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 199
Book Description
For the Souls of Black Folks examines the impact of black religious culture in shaping the ethical values and sociopolitical condition of U.S. blacks. The book reviews the nexus of theological traditions and historical factors that have formed black churches as environments where preachers serve as the moral compass for black churchgoers. For the Souls of Black Folks builds upon the work of sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, who highlighted the presence of a double consciousness in the collective psyche of blacks stemming from racial oppression. The book explores the ways in which that double consciousness, often reflected in black preaching, socializes black Christians to subjugate their own moral authority to that of black preachers. The central argument is that this socialization to submit to preachers greatly underserves black churchgoers in developing and exercising their own power and authority as social agents, and thus significantly impedes the full sociopolitical liberation of all blacks. The book offers important new preaching strategies that more effectively facilitate the empowerment of blacks as critical agents of social transformation and healing in the twenty-first century.

Bodies of Reform
Author: James B. Salazar
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814741320
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable “stuff,” has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity. Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of “character” in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body.

Spiritual Reading
Author: Harvey Angela Lou
Publisher: James Clarke & Company
ISBN: 0227905806
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
Spiritual Reading explores how God, the Bible and the practices of reading are all connected. Angela Lou Harvey investigates how the spiritual reading of the Bible takes place in our modern, literate, Western culture. In this context, a spiritual reading of the Bible is one that aims to know and love God through individual Bible reading. Spiritual Reading discusses what it means to read the Bible well and looks at the role of the church as giving us guidance for reading it in this way. Harvey considers these ideas vis-a-vis historically orientated biblical scholarship as well as reading the Bible as a classic work of Western literature. With reference to the use of literature through a Christian framework in the works of C.S. Lewis and Alan Jacobs, Harvey analyses the significance the Bible has had in shaping other literary works. Drawing upon insights of theologians such as Karl Barth, Henri de Lubac, and Ellen F. Davis, Spiritual Reading suggests that a renewed understanding of faith is needed for the spiritual reading of Scripture. Spiritual Reading is for the reader who wishes to gain a deeper understanding on how Scripture can better connect an individual to God.
