Book Description
Excerpt from The Prune Industry of France: June 1967 Another serious deterrent to prune production at this time was the shortage of farm labor; the War had depleted the male population. On the other hand, many foreigners, particularly Italians, had recently moved into the area, and were engaged in agriculture; however, their main interest was in field crops rather than tree crops. The underlying reason for the continuous and drastic decline in prune production up to the second World War was the decrease in profitability of raising prunes for drying. Though prices received by growers were well maintained until 1915, prices apparently had not kept up with rises in costs or returns from alternative crops. In subsequent years, grower prices actually declined. By the 1930-39 period, they were averaging to francs per kilogram, compared with approximately to gold francs per kilo before World War I; but the postwar franc was worth only one-tenth the gold franc. Book Description
Excerpt from Foreign News on Prunes: February 4, 1929 The depletion of man power on the farms of southern France dur - ing and as a result of the War materially affected the French prune industry because of the resulting neglect of the prune trees. Simultaneous with this neglect of the French prune trees, the prune producers in Oregon and California expanded their orchards at a rapid rate. These plantings are now coming into full bearing. The prune interests in both France and Yugoslavia are now finding it extremely difficult to rehabilitate their prune industries because of the fact that Oregon and California can produce prunes on such an enormous scale and of such a uniformly good grade and can sell them.in Europe at such low prices.
