Book Description
Excerpt from The Prince a Romance of the Camp and Court of Alexander the Great, the Love Story of Roxana, the Maid of Bactria Of Philip's invincible troops there was no hint save as some heavily armed soldier paced his rounds before the closed gates or on the city's protecting walls. For the King and his army were away, intent upon a final trial of strength on the plains of Cheronea, between Macedonia and the combined armies of Athens and Thebes. But of the result of the struggle no word had yet reached the wait ing city and its impatient Queen, or the wives and sweethearts of those who had gone forth to battle for their country; and thus it had been for days and weeks wherein those left behind scarce spoke above a whisper, so great was their distress. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVII THE OUTLAWS The visit to the home of the outlaws, having been determined upon, as related in the preceding chapter, Alexander and the robber chief took their way up the steep mountain-side, the obscure path being scarce discernible in the fast gathering darkness. Reaching an open glade far up the height, they left their horses in charge of one of Ossa's followers, and resuming the ascent, presently reached a spreading rock, from the summit of which could be traced the valley far below, now filled with the mists and shadows of the night. Looking about him, Alexander discovered, at the opposite extremity of the rock, a huge cavern opening into the mountain-side; and there, to his surprise, lights were to be seen and men of savage aspect cleaning their weapons, or occupied in preparing the evening meal. Facing the cave, Ossa uttered a shrill cry, whereupon the assembled outlaws, hastily abandoning their several occupations, grasped their weapons and hastened to group themselves about him as if some pressing danger threatened. "Have you brought us the Prince to keep company with his learned tutor?" one of the most forward and repulsive of the robbers called out, crowding close to Alexander and scanning him in the uncertain light. "No, Prado, I have brought you a chief instead." "A chief!" "Yes." "How is that?" Prado asked, incredulously. "Having overcome me, your King, in fair fight, he becomes chief of right according to the ancient law of our tribe." "And did he so overcome you?" Prado said, scanning Alexander anew. "Yes, and having me at his mercy might have killed me had he been so inclined." "What did he do instead?" Prado said, scowling, as if regretting Alexander's clemency. "He offered me service in Philip's army, and I...

Book Description
Alexander the Great of Macedon was no stranger to controversy in his own time. Conqueror of the Greek states, of Egypt and of the Persian Empire as well as many of the principalities of the Indus Valley, he nevertheless became revered as well as vilified. Was he simply a destroyer of the ancient civilizations and religions of these regions, or was he a hero of the Persian dynasties and of Islam? The conflicting views that were taken of him in the Middle East in his own time and the centuries that followed are still reflected in the tensions that exist between east and west today. The story of Alexander became the subject of legend in the medieval west, but was perhaps even more pervasive in the east. The Alexander Romance was translated into Syriac in the sixth century and may have become current in Persia as early as the third century AD. From these beginnings it reached into the Persian national epic, the Shahnameh, into Jewish traditions, and into the Quran and subsequent Arab romance. The papers in this volume all have the aim of deepening our understanding of this complex development. If we can understand better why Alexander is such an important figure in both east and west, we shall be a little closer to understanding what unites two often antipathetic worlds. This volume collects the papers delivered at the conference of the same title held at the University of Exeter from July 26-29 2010. More than half the papers were by invited speakers and were designed to provide a systematic view of the subject; the remainder were selected for their ability to carry research forward in an integrated way.
